Thank you WBEZ for featuring our program to help pregnant moms & parents on the locate & get off waitlists for services like lactation consults to support finding housing - regardless of their income.

The free program is a partnership between Lurie Children's and West Side United, an organization that collaborates with half a dozen hospital systems to help erase the life expectancy gap between the Loop downtown and 10 neighborhoods on the West Side.

There’s no required income to be part of the program, which aims to connect families with everything from housing to lactation services.

Shriver Center on Poverty Law’s President Audra Wilson: “COVID has exposed a huge chasm in our society. During COVID, we applauded essential workers, but the majority of them had no PTO, no health insurance - they were on the frontlines but didn’t even have PPE. It feels very disingenuous to applaud them then but not choose policies that protect them now.”

United Way of Metro Chicago’s President Sean Garrett: “We’ve been talking about policy impact in the aggregate, but we need to drill down to what it means on a micro level - to see the disproportionate negative impacts, but also the ways that targeted investment can help.”

YMCA of Metro Chicago’s Chief Learning Officer Danette Connors: A child’s brain develops the fastest in their first five years of life. It says something about us as a country that we don’t fund education for children in their first 5 years of life.
