Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is emerging as a leading somatic therapy for resolving the symptoms of trauma and chronic pain. BCST is a profound modality that uses light contact-touch to orient to the deeper forces within our human system. It supports the regulation of the nervous system through the release of tension and the underlying imprint of trauma that is a primary cause of stress and chronic pain in the body. BCST is particularly helpful to ease and resolve the imprint of shock and bring forth our innate resilience to daily stress. It helps restore physical health, mental clarity and emotional wellbeing.

Anxiety, Inability to Sleep and It's Lesser Known Causes
One of, if not the most common reason people are unable to sleep is because of the charge, the imprint, that is held in the nervous system and its components. There are several areas in which you can do some research related to this. One is called the HPA axis and the other is the better known Polyvagal Theory. Both describe functional parts of the nervous system that become ‘stuck’ in a heightened state of fight-or-flight vigilance that is the result of acute or extended traumatic experience and does not allow the nervous system to down-regulate into a relaxed state free of anxiety. Down regulation into the parasympathetic state, where normal hormonal functioning and regulation occurs, is related to calm, groundedness, deep sleep (and the ability to sleep), digestion, fertility and creativity. Over 65% of Americans fall within a spectrum in which the nervous system is in this state. As a result people find it very difficult to fall asleep and because they do not enter deep sleep easily, they do not feel rested.

There are several somatic therapies that are superb in allowing this charge or imprint to be released. The most well-known for doing this is Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy or BCST. If you are unaware of this therapy you might also want to do some research into it. All craniosacral therapy is relaxing in the hands of a good therapist. A well-trained and experienced BCST therapist will at the beginning of a session facilitate a deepening into a parasympathetic state or holistic shift that is the basis in which the session unfolds. In it, the deeper forces of the human system's innate potency or Health uncouple from the way in which they are holding inertial forces of trauma or imprint and become free to move, engage and release those imprints. To the extent that they are resolved in any given session, the nervous system and body/mind is able to return to the state that has always been present underneath the imprint prior to the imprinting experience.

This I hope is very good news for those who have been trying for many years to work with this in their lives. In 2014 I trained for two years with one of the most well-known teachers of BCST, become certified and have been practicing it full-time since then. 95% of my clients are women and all of them come because of chronic physical and or mental/emotional symptoms related to anxiety and stress. You can find a certified, registered practitioner of this work closest to where you live here at the Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Association of North America's website. https://www.craniosacraltherapy.org/find-a-practitioner-page. If you or any of your readers have any questions about chronic symptoms related to held stress or trauma, or about BCST and how it is able to resolve it please feel free to get in touch with me. - Paul

General Anxiety Dosorder is a diagnosis that is a catch-phrase for the many symptoms and types of trauma whose causes are more numerous than all the possible symptoms themselves. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is recognized by many in the trauma research and therapy community that, in the hands of an accomplished practitioner, it will engage and release the imprint of shock that lies at the root of one's nervous system to resolve anxiety and stress that is the result of it. This shock and imprint is transformed at the root of the nervous system so it (the nervous system) can return to its own normal functioning and capacity to down-regulate into its parasympathetic, relaxed, calm, digestive state.

Introduction to BCST

Meeting Trauma with Informed Transparency
I've realized in doing work with my clients, of whom are about 99% women and of which at least 75% have experienced some form of sexual abuse or molestation from family members, 'friends', or neighbors, that their feeling seen, heard, and met explicitly with what they are holding has depended entirely on a conscious recognition and understanding of their experience through the like experience in my own life and having derived this through working with it directly over years, and going beyond the trauma and its triggering into a territory where an essential working understanding of it and its effects on the body and psychological outlook has resulted in a direct sensitivity and responsiveness to it.

In thinking about this and how it is possible, I realized there are levels of effective responsiveness. One is bounded by the degree in which we have not fully resolved the experiences we've had of similar events in our own lives which will result in an obscuring in some way of our ability to hold an informed transparence and so effective presence for them. It is difficult to describe in words how having done so helps them. But they clearly intuit two things, that we have been where they are and that we have seen our way through and beyond it, and this gives them knowingly or not an immense relief. When this is paired with our effective use of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) or another somatic work then we have an essential and powerful approach.

In the last few years I have seen a lot of written criticism about empathy that essentially compares it to hand holding. I believe generally the reason why this has happened is because of our inability to mate sensitivity and acknowledgement with an informed transparency that will give our clients a visceral feeling that we can be an effective presence to them.

I am not putting down the place where we might find ourselves less than this. For many years I felt an inadequacy in being able to be with my clients in a fully competent way. But that uncomfortability brought about a striving to become better at communicating my understanding and bringing this together with the effectiveness of our BCST work.
