Anxiety, Inability to Sleep and It's Lesser Known Causes
One of, if not the most common reason people are unable to sleep is because of the charge, the imprint, that is held in the nervous system and its components. There are several areas in which you can do some research related to this. One is called the HPA axis and the other is the better known Polyvagal Theory. Both describe functional parts of the nervous system that become ‘stuck’ in a heightened state of fight-or-flight vigilance that is the result of acute or extended traumatic experience and does not allow the nervous system to down-regulate into a relaxed state free of anxiety. Down regulation into the parasympathetic state, where normal hormonal functioning and regulation occurs, is related to calm, groundedness, deep sleep (and the ability to sleep), digestion, fertility and creativity. Over 65% of Americans fall within a spectrum in which the nervous system is in this state. As a result people find it very difficult to fall asleep and because they do not enter deep sleep easily, they do not feel rested.
There are several somatic therapies that are superb in allowing this charge or imprint to be released. The most well-known for doing this is Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy or BCST. If you are unaware of this therapy you might also want to do some research into it. All craniosacral therapy is relaxing in the hands of a good therapist. A well-trained and experienced BCST therapist will at the beginning of a session facilitate a deepening into a parasympathetic state or holistic shift that is the basis in which the session unfolds. In it, the deeper forces of the human system's innate potency or Health uncouple from the way in which they are holding inertial forces of trauma or imprint and become free to move, engage and release those imprints. To the extent that they are resolved in any given session, the nervous system and body/mind is able to return to the state that has always been present underneath the imprint prior to the imprinting experience.
This I hope is very good news for those who have been trying for many years to work with this in their lives. In 2014 I trained for two years with one of the most well-known teachers of BCST, become certified and have been practicing it full-time since then. 95% of my clients are women and all of them come because of chronic physical and or mental/emotional symptoms related to anxiety and stress. You can find a certified, registered practitioner of this work closest to where you live here at the Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Association of North America's website. https://www.craniosacraltherapy.org/find-a-practitioner-page. If you or any of your readers have any questions about chronic symptoms related to held stress or trauma, or about BCST and how it is able to resolve it please feel free to get in touch with me. - Paul
