🖤 Juneteenth & the Fight for Our Freedom: Honoring Adriana Smith 🕊️

Juneteenth is a sacred reminder of what it means to fight for freedom, not just in body, but in spirit, in birth, and in death. Yet freedom was denied to Adriana Smith, a 23-year-old Black woman who was stripped of her humanity in both life and passing.

After being declared brain dead, Adriana’s body was forced to remain on life support , not for her healing, not for her wishes, but to serve as an incubator for science. She was not treated as a whole person, but as a vessel. Denied the dignity of rest. Denied the right to die sacredly, on her terms, with peace.

This is the legacy of medical racism where Black women are not granted autonomy in life or death. Where our bodies are still owned, studied, and used.

As Black doulas, we fight for reproductive justice, death justice, and bodily sovereignty. We believe Black women deserve full humanity, full consent, and full liberation in birth, in life, and in crossing.

On this Juneteenth, we honor Adriana. We rage. We remember. And we reaffirm: Black bodies are not for use. We are sacred. We are sovereign.

✨Happy Black Maternal Health Week 2025✨

🗣️🗣️🗣️Black women in the US experience a significantly higher maternal mortality rate than white women, with recent data showing Black women dying at a rate nearly three times higher. And while it has been referred to as a Maternal Health Crisis, what we know to be true is that it is a crisis of the system.

🗣️🗣️🗣️Black women aren’t broken! How can we be? Our bodies have endured some of the most horrific moments in our history in this country, and yet we are still here to bear witness to the resilience and brilliance of Black women.

Why Are The Mortality Rates Higher For Black Women?

✅Systemic Racism: Implicit bias within the healthcare system, lack of standardized healthcare, and the stress caused by systemic racism all contribute to the disparity.
✅Access to Care: Barriers to accessing quality healthcare, including insurance coverage, transportation, and childcare, can disproportionately affect Black women.

What Can Be Done?

💕The first step is to believe Black women! Then there can be systemic changes that will actually work.💕

Systemically America Needs To:

✅Improve access to quality healthcare: Expand access to prenatal care, doula services, and postpartum care.
✅Address social determinants of health: Invest in programs that address poverty, lack of education, and poor housing.
✅Combat implicit bias: Train healthcare providers to recognize and address implicit bias in their interactions with patients.
✅Promote culturally competent care: Ensure that healthcare providers are sensitive to the needs and experiences of Black women.

✨✨Announcement 2 of 3 is here✨✨

We’re so excited to announce that we’ve partnered with A House in Austin to provide Birth Doulas, postpartum support, and group education to the families of the Austin community.

A House in Austin provides support to parents in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. It’s an extra special program as they’ve partnered with Our Mothers’ Light to provide free doula support to expectant mothers who are over the age of 24. This is unique because most social service agencies focus their attention on pregnant people under 24 but as we know needing the support of a doula doesn’t have age limitations.

This is a full circle moment for me as a girl who grew up on the West Side. People often draw differences between people from the West Side of Chicago versus from the South Side and I think they always get it wrong. One of the biggest differences between growing up on the West Side vs. the South Side is the West Side is made up of families. There is a deep sense of community and belonging and many people never leave the West Side, whereas the South Side is often made up of transplants and now University staff and students. This sense of community lives deep within me as it is one of the cornerstones of my upbringing. I’m so grateful to be able to pour into the women of the west side of Chicago.

In need of a photographer for my website.

It's time for providers to start having honest conversations. Too often we've had people recount their provider's discussion about induction & let's just say, it's a very watered down truth.
