This doesn't mean men don't experience emotions, trauma, or mental health illnesses. Most men are socialized to be heteronormative, strong, and "without" any problems. In reality, this is not the case.

Let me know in the comments, how does this relate to you or someone you know?

I was just talking with a client about mental health and how men are often socialized. We started listing all the things men typically hear growing up — messages that can lead to low emotional intelligence and that “tough guy” attitude.

Then I thought… what about all the statements women hear? Especially cis women (those assigned female at birth).

And then I thought — let’s make it funnier. What are the comebacks we wish we could say to those comments, but usually don’t? 😅

In South Asian culture, respect for elders is deeply valued — but respect from elders often isn’t expected in return. This automatically creates a power dynamic based on age and parental roles, and it can widen the divide between parents and children, aunties and uncles, mentors and peers.

So I’m curious — what are some things you heard growing up about “being a good girl,” “staying quiet,” or “not talking back”? Drop them in the comments! 👇🏽

✨ And if you’re looking for a therapist who breaks gender norms, gently but assertively challenges unhealthy patterns, and still honors your cultural roots — you’re in the right place.

I offer individual and couples therapy for clients in Illinois, and life & relationship coaching for clients outside Illinois. My approach integrates DBT, CBT, and somatic (trauma-informed) therapy to help you feel confident, strong, and emotionally grounded — while staying true to your values and identity. 💛 Just click the link in my bio or message me to learn more!

Posted • Raise your hand if a therapist has ever told you to "just set boundaries with your parents" ✋🏽... but you knew that wasn't exactly an option without creating a family crisis. 😅

This moment from 's latest special on hit way too close to home for many of us. It perfectly captures the frustration of trying to explain deeply rooted cultural values—like the importance of family, collectivism, and honoring your parents, to someone who might not fully understand.

That’s why culturally responsive care is so important. Working with a therapist who gets your background means you don’t have to start from square one every session or explain why “no contact” might not be the right move for your situation. Instead, they meet you where you are and help you navigate solutions that work within your cultural context.

Have you ever felt misunderstood in therapy? What’s one piece of advice you wish your therapist didn’t give you? Let us know in the comments! 💬
