When should colon cancer screening begin? Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard, but there are also other screening options available depending on the patient’s needs and eligibility.

For average-risk individuals—meaning no symptoms, no personal history of colon cancer, and no family history of colon cancer or advanced adenomas in a first-degree relative—current guidelines recommend starting screening at age 45.

Screening should begin earlier if there is a family history of colon cancer or a highly precancerous polyp in a parent or sibling, or if a patient has a known genetic condition that increases risk. In those situations, specific screening guidelines apply.

A gastroenterologist can help determine the most appropriate screening plan for each patient, often in coordination with primary care.

If you’re experiencing heartburn after most meals, multiple times a week, or it’s been going on for months or years, it’s something to pay attention to. Red flags like difficulty swallowing or unexplained weight loss should also be evaluated.

Lifestyle and diet play a big role. To***co, alcohol, tomato-based foods, caffeine, and large meals can all trigger symptoms. Eating late at night or having larger meals later in the day can make it worse.

Focusing on healthier habits like better sleep, balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and weight management can help reduce symptoms. If heartburn is persistent, it’s best to be evaluated by a gastroenterologist.
