Run For Gus was a huge success! We even saw some familiar faces from the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders Team. Dr.Waanders had wonderful and encouraging words to say ahead of the race as well as some. As of today $220,373 (and counting!) has been raised towards the fight for Pediatric Brain Cancer. Thank you all who showed up, donated, shared encouraging thoughts and stories, and continue to fight both silently and publicly.

WHY RUN?
Gus Evangelides lost his battle with a brain tumor just three months shy of his second birthday. Now, his inspiring legacy lives on.
When you participate in Run for Gus, your donations directly support Lurie Children’s Brain Tumor Center. Lurie Children’s Brain Tumor Center offers highly specialized state-of-the-art care, while also providing patient support programs like Beads of Courage. It’s not always easy to fully capture a patient’s experience in words. This program encourages children to string together beads, each representing a milestone in their journey, helping tell their story of courage in a unique, tangible way. By joining us this July, you can honor Gus and support thousands of children battling brain tumors.

One selfless act can change a life forever. 💙 In 2017, Jack was diagnosed with a rare leukemia. Thanks to CAR T-cell therapy and a life-saving stem cell transplant from an anonymous donor, Jack made a full recovery. This spring—8 years later—he met his donor, Yannick, for the first time. The two instantly bonded over their love of soccer, proving that generosity knows no borders. ⚽💫

🎉 Celebrating Blake: A True Warrior!
Meet Blake, a super sweet and brave kid who recently finished his chemotherapy journey and rang the bell in celebration! 🔔✨

Blake’s journey wasn’t easy—he faced some tough days in intensive therapy—but his strength and resilience have been amazing. Recently, Blake and his family threw an End of Chemo party to celebrate, and in true Blake fashion, he turned it into a chance to give back. He asked guests to bring toys and donations to help others. 💛

Huge thanks to Blake, his family, and everyone who donated toys! Your kindness and positivity are truly inspiring. 🎉

Let’s all celebrate Blake and send him as much encouragement as possible as he moves forward! 👏

“There is nothing like another parent who has been on the ride to give insight, survival tips, support and hope” – Outpatient parent, after connecting with a ParentWISE volunteer

Our PeerWISE and ParentWISE volunteers are previous patients and guardians who know what it’s like to be in the hospital or go through treatments and procedures. They offer connection, empowerment, and support through sharing similar experiences. Connections are primarily virtual and may include discussion of diagnosis, treatment process, emotional stressors and more.

Interested in offering this type of support to other families? Please reach out to us at parentwise@luriechildrens.org or 312-227-3280 to learn more about becoming a PW Volunteer!

Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, Neuro-Oncology & Stem Cell Transplantation

The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Lurie Children’s treats more children with cancer and blood disorders than any other hospital in Illinois. Although cancer is rare in children, we treat 220 new patients each year for a wide range of childhood cancers. The center is ranked 17th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for pediatric oncology. We also have the region’s most complete array of programs and services for children with blood disorders such as Hemoglobin Disorders, Hemophilia, Thrombophilia and Sickle Cell Disease.
