This week’s featured case study involves a 70+ y/o female patient who has lymphedema of the trunk and both legs which resulted to cellulitis and pressure injuries. Most patients don’t get diagnosed with lymphedema until they have wounds and they went to hospital because of an infection of the skin. This lady could not move around because her lymphedema made her arthritis even worse. Also, she had pressure sores on the back of her thighs from not being able to move. It’s a vicious cycle. Lymphedema PT can help a lot in healing the wounds, improve mobility, and prevent another hospitalization.

Another success story to share: A patient who underwent emergency surgical procedure for a fracture had gone home with an infected incision. He also has lymphedema on both legs as a result of Multiple Sclerosis. He was given a Negative Pressure Wound Therapy unit but the incision did not close. Patient was referred to Engram for wound consult and treatment. After 3 sessions, incision was almost healed.

This week’s success story features an almost 97 year old lady who aims to stay independent. She had a recent fall and broke the top portion of her right lower leg and was placed in a knee immobilizer for 6 weeks and restricted to not bear weight on it. Her goal is to go back to gardening in her big yard before the summer ends. Physical Therapy involved patient and family education on importance of complying with restrictions, training on safe techniques to transfer from different surfaces, how to use a wheelchair and position in properly, and strengthening the opposite leg and upper body as she relied on her unaffected areas to be safe.

Patient was seen twice a week at her home & when it was time to bear weight, PT focused on weight bearing activities, standing balance training, strengthening activities, and gradually working towards walking without any device in the house and using the walker for her yard.

Age is just a number. Her intact cognition and strong motivation made it possible for her to get to her goal!
