It’s that time of year again πŸ˜–

Daylight savings hits Sunday March 10 and the clocks will spring forward an hour. (AKA, 1 hour less sleep)

If you need to keep your kiddo on their same schedule, on Sunday adjust their naps and bedtime to be 30 minutes later than normal. Keep this for several days and then on Thursday, move it earlier 30 minutes to get back to your usual times.

If you have a little one that doesn’t have a set schedule, then just keep going by wake windows.

If you have an early riser- you’re one of the lucky few that this time change can help! My first recommendation is always try an earlier bedtime first, but if that hasn’t worked for you, then shift your child’s entire schedule back by an hour with the time change! If they normally wake up at 5 am, with the time change that will be 6 am, push nap back an hour and bedtime back an hour and keep that schedule!

Be patient, it can take a little bit for your child to adjust- especially the mornings. Make sure the room is dark in the morning and then once it’s time to get up, bring them into the sunlight to help reset that body clock. πŸ¨πŸ’€

With Christmas coming and black Friday this weekend, here are some toys we are loving at 4-6+ months.

1) Fisher Price play mat piano. I don't like toys with annoying noises- this one's songs are not too bad! Yes, you will still be singing about purple monkeys (iykyk). It's great to have baby lay on his back and reach for the toys, tummy time watching the piano, or tilt the piano to practice sitting!

2) Playskool popper giraffe (or any popping toy). Great distraction for tummy time, or to lean on and watch while prop sitting

3) Baby Einsteins Glow and Discover Activity Bar. This can be flat or lift the flat to prop it up, making it great for tummy time and sitting practice! It plays classical music, or can learn animals and colors in English, Spanish or French!

4) Spinning tower (lots of different brands). So fun to watch so great for distraction in any position!

Extra bonus idea for babies learning to sit- the boppy pillow to put around them to stop falls!

I'm not an influencer so I can't tell you if they are going on sale this weekend πŸ˜‚, but watch for them if you need gift ideas in this age range!

It's Halloween! Here are some tips to help keep your child's sleep on track.

1) Have a plan and make sure everyone is on the same page for the night. This way your children know when they are trick or treating and when they will be done and heading to bed

2) Don't let the festivities run too late! Ideally, keep your bedtime within 30 minutes of normal

3) It's okay to eat some candy, just try to limit so you don't have to fight a sugar high before bed! And avoid chocolate (caffeine!).

4) Keep your bedtime routine the same so your child can still have their normal wind-down routine before falling asleep.

Have fun!!πŸ¨πŸ’€

Daylight Savings Time ends next weekend! Your clocks β€œfall back” an hour early Sunday morning.

Theoretically, this should mean an extra hour of sleep, but most likely your child will still wake up at the same time, except now 6:30 am is 5:30 am and that is simply too early.

For all ages, we want to bridge the hour change by adjusting the schedule 30 minutes Sunday through Wednesday, and then going back to normal on Thursday. We are going to lengthen wake windows by 30 minutes or move naps/bedtime 30 minutes earlier (which feels like 30 minutes later).

If your child wakes up early, leave them in bed an extra 10 minutes every day. If they are old enough to understand, use an OK to Wake clock to help them stay in bed until the desired time.

Follow these steps to help adjust your child to the new time during the week after.

Let me know if you have any questions or need help with your baby’s schedule! πŸ¨πŸ’€

Whether you just want to get rid of it, your child is getting too old to continue using it, or you've realized it has become a sleep prop, getting rid of the pacifier can seem scary. Let's talk it through!

If your child is old enough to understand what is going on, make sure you start giving them a heads up that the pacifier is going away in "x" days. I've heard of many creative ideas to make it exciting for toddlers:

-Give the pacifier to the "pacifier fairy" and put it under the pillow at night for mom and dad to take away

-Plant the pacifier outside so a pacifier plant grows (mom and dad have to secretly plant something!)

-Put it inside a Build-A-Bear

-Send it away to another baby in need (pretend to mail it out)

You don't need to have a creative idea if you don't want to. You can always just take them all away on the set day or cut off the tips so your child can't use it anymore.

For little ones that won't understand what's happening, just stop using the pacifier cold turkey. I think it's best for consistency to get rid of the pacifier all at once for the entire day. It's confusing if baby is allowed to have the pacifier in the car, or during the day, but not at night.

When you take it away, expect a little struggle to fall asleep. Don't introduce any new props and don't go back to the pacifier or you'll undo any progress! Give baby some comfort but let them learn to self soothe in another way without the pacifier.

If you've gone through this, was it a smooth or bumpy transition? πŸ¨πŸ’€

Did you know there are reasons for the different shapes of pacifiers? Let's go through them!

1) Cylindrical: Best for newborns and breastfed babies as it promotes tongue movement that imitates breastfeeding. The wide part at the base makes baby's lips rest in an open position.

2) Cherry Shaped: Also allows baby's tongue to cup the pacifier similar to breastfeeding. However, it's not wider at the base so baby's lips will close which could cause baby to have a narrow latch when breastfeeding.

3) Butterfly Shaped: This is a flat ni**le pacifier. It won't allow baby's tongue to cup around the ni**le and could cause issues with breastfeeding because of that.

4) Orthodontic: This is a slanted, flat ni**le with a beveled side. Research recommends this type once baby is getting teeth. It is least likely to alter the shape of baby's mouth. These pacifiers can sometimes encourage biting, which would not be ideal if breastfeeding.

Ultimately, what type of pacifier you choose depends on what type of pacifier your baby likes! There are pros and cons to each, so try the different shapes to see what works for you.

And remember, ideally you want to stop using pacifiers between 4-6 months and especially by 1 year to prevent oral issues.πŸ¨πŸ’€

Pacifiers are recommended by the AAP to reduce the risk of SIDS but pacifiers can also become a sleep prop. So what are the pros and cons of using a pacifier?

Pros
-reduce risk of SIDS
- help baby relax
-help baby fall asleep or back to sleep
-calm baby down during the day

Cons
-sleep prop- infants can't put it in their mouth on their own. Meaning you are going in multiple times a night
- baby might wake up when it falls out
- extended pacifier use can lead to mouth palate issues, dental problems or delayed speech

If it helps your baby sleep, then use it! If your baby isn't interested, then don't use them. And if you're sick of popping it back in baby's mouth a million times a night, then maybe it's time to stop using it!πŸ¨πŸ’€

Got enough pacifiers? 😝

We either have all pacifiers accounted for like in this picture or we can't find any. They'll be under the couch where Ember hid them, between the crib and wall, floating in the car, buried in the diaper bag or anywhere inconvenient to when you need them! πŸ™„

How attached is your little one to the pacifier?? πŸ¨πŸ’€

Rhett woke up this morning and his hands were so cold!! Does that mean he was cold overnight?

Babies' bodies automatically channel heat to their core and vital organs, so it is totally normal for their hands or feet to be cold. If you want to check baby's temperature, feel their back or stomach- if that is really hot or cold, then you know you need to adjust the temperature or layers.

Keep the room set between 68-72 degrees F. If the room is cold, wear warmer PJs or use a thicker (higher TOG) sleep sack. If baby is hot, use thin PJs (like bamboo) and a low TOG or no sleep sack.

Keeping baby at a good temperature will help them be able to sleep better and longer! πŸ¨πŸ’€

Nursery must haves:

Sound machine- I love our Hatch, so easy to turn on and off and you can customize settings on your phone

Blackout curtains- as seen here, it doesn't have to look pretty as long as it blocks the light! Remember to check the edges that light isn't sneaking through

A good crib- should be firm and flat with nothing added to it.

Bonus- our favorite Sleep Sack is the love to dream with his arms up!

What do you do during naps? Do you quick get all the cleaning and laundry done? Or do you relax and nap yourself?

I split it 50/50 probably. Sometimes I'm ambitious and other times I just need to flop on the couch

Sleep Sack Reviews!

HALO SLEEPSACK SWADDLE
-very quick and easy to velcro arms down for swaddle
-Double zipper for easy diaper changes
-Good for transitioning out of swaddle with 1 then 2 arms out
- Different TOG levels and patterns
-Sometimes the velcro sticks on itself and you have to untangle it
-Maybe not as cute since it's baggy?

SWADDLE ME
-Easy to swaddle arms down with velcro flaps
-Good for transitioning out of swaddle with 1 then 2 arms out
-Cute slim fit and lots of patterns
-No zipper so have to remove the whole swaddle for diaper changes
-No choices for TOG levels
-Velcro gets stuck on itself

LOVE TO DREAM
-Great for babies that like arms up
-Different TOG levels and patterns
-Also has options for removeable arms
-Free movement of arms but reduces startle reflex

Since Rhett prefers his arms up, we are loving the Love to Dream. But if he likes to be swaddled arms down, I would choose the Halo simply because of the zipper for diaper changes. You don't need any extra hassle in the middle of the night!! πŸ¨πŸ’€
