It's amazing that everything you see depends on this delicate, complex tissue. That's why protecting your retinal health is so important! Share this video to spread the word about the retina and its role in healthy vision.

Medicare Open Enrollment is almost here!
If you’re thinking about switching plans, make sure you review our Medicare Open Enrollment Patient Checklist first.

Retina patients should take a close look at:
• Whether your plan will continue to cover your retina specialist and needed medications
• If the plan requires preauthorization for tests or procedures
• Whether it uses “step therapy” (or “fail first” policies) that could delay or restrict the treatment your retina specialist recommends

Good to know: Original Medicare does not allow step therapy.

Diabetic retinopathy affects 9.6 million Americans and is the leading cause of blindness in US working-age adults.

As diabetes rates continue to rise, this sight-threatening condition is becoming even more prevalent. Warning signs include blurry central vision, floaters or shadows, difficulty reading, eye pressure, and trouble with color perception. The longer someone has diabetes, the greater their risk. If you have diabetes, regular eye exams aren't optional -- they're essential!

Regular dilated eye exams are especially imprtant for older American and those at higher risk for retinal diseases like diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.

During # HealthyAgingMonth, take the advice of ASRS President Dr. Geoffrey G. Emerson, "Vision loss can dramatically impact your ability to stay active and independent as you age, but when it comes to retinal conditions, many are preventable or treatable when caught early. By knowing the symptoms and risk factors, maintaining healthy habits, and getting regular dilated eye exams, older Americans can take control of their retina health and continue enjoying the activities they love most."

Age-related macular degeneration ( ) affects 19.8 million Americans and is the leading cause of vision loss among older adults. Despite its prevalence, many people are unaware of the symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred.

The good news: AMD is most treatable when caught early! Key symptoms to watch for are distorted vision or seeing straight lines appear wavy, decreased color brightness, gradual or sudden central vision loss, and dark spots in central vision.
