Arthur “Art” Gillespie, a former Chicago police captain, underwent a successful double-lung transplant at Northwestern Medicine after being told he couldn’t be helped due to damage from cancer in one lung and from COVID-19 in the other.

“Despite being told ‘no’ by other doctors, Arthur kept searching for answers. I feel honored that we were able to help him,” says Ankit Bharat, MD, chief of Thoracic Surgery and director of Northwestern Medicine Canning Thoracic Institute, who performed the transplant.

Arthur Gillespie successfully had a double lung transplant after nearly four years of struggling with cancer and COVID damage.
