💛✨ Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration of Hispanic and Latino history and culture. While we celebrate Hispanic and Latino communities beyond this month, from September 15 to October 15 we give extra recognition to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States, including important advocacy work, vibrant art, popular and traditional foods, and much more. This year’s theme “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future” honors the rich heritage, resilience, and future contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States.

We are committed to providing culturally responsive care, challenging stigma, and advocating for equity. We believe that honoring heritage also means supporting justice, amplifying voices, and affirming the dignity of every individual. This month, we encourage reflection, education, and action- both in celebration and in recognition of the work still needed. Together, we can foster a more compassionate and inclusive community.

Group is starting tomorrow! 💛✨

Living with a chronic or invisible illness can feel isolating, emotionally exhausting, and can make us feel misunderstood. This is a supportive, art therapy-based mental health group designed to provide a safe space for individuals navigating these unique challenges. We will use creative expression, through drawing, painting, collage, and other accessible art forms, to explore emotions, reduce stress, and connect with others who understand what it is like to live with a body that does not always cooperate or having invisible conditions. Guided by a Licensed Art Therapist, participants will engage in weekly sessions focused on themes such as grief, resilience, identity, and self-compassion. No artistic skill is necessary, just a willingness to express, explore, and share. Whether your diagnosis is physical, neurological, autoimmune, or otherwise hidden from view, you are welcome. Maximum 10 people. $60 per session.

Facilitated in person by Emma Burzycki, M.A., LPC, ATR, Saturdays, 3:00 to 4:30 pm CST, September 6 through October 25.

Hi Everyone! We welcome Em to our group this month! 💛✨

Em Shea, M.S., LPC-C (she/they)
Psychotherapist

Therapy with Em focuses on building relationships and fostering connections, working toward self-acceptance, and integrating previous experiences into the current self. Em believes therapy is a collaborative relationship, meaning the therapeutic space looks different for each individual. Em allows the client to guide the pace as trust and comfort is built, and as part of creating a trauma-informed space.

Em predominately utilizes a relational approach as they believe growth comes from empathy and authenticity. In order to best serve clients in their personal therapeutic journey, Em incorporates elements of treatment modalities such as narrative therapy, internal family systems (IFS), somatic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and acceptance & commitment therapy (ACT).

Em prioritizes centering each client’s needs and intersectional identities. Em identifies as q***r and non-binary, which directly informs their non-judgmental, feminist, and trauma-informed practice. As a white person, Em understands her position of privilege in all spaces, but they seek to attend to that privilege in the therapeutic space by actively practicing anti-racism and cultural awareness and humility.

Em has worked with clients from a wide variety of cultural and racial backgrounds. They have also worked extensively with q***r folks, mothers, and teens. She is open to working with all clients, but women, children, and non-binary folks might feel the most comfortable in their care. Em considers it an honor to be a therapist and walk alongside clients in their healing processes.

We are delighted to have Em with us! ✨

Spotlight ✨ on Abena

“Representation in therapy matters because the therapeutic space should be one in which the client feels seen, heard and understood. This is why it is important to have more Black therapists so that the Black people of all backgrounds and walks of life know that they are not alone in their experiences, including the cultural and systemic challenges that they regularly face. Additionally, having more Black therapists can help challenge the pervasive notion that Black people must always be strong and deal with their struggles in isolation, which is a belief that remains widespread in many Black communities around the world.” ~ Abena Ntim-Addae

Happy Pride Month, Everyone! 🏳️‍🌈✨

❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 We want to take a moment to reflect on the importance of inclusive, affirming care, not just this month, but year-round.

Supporting the mental health of the LGBTQIA+ community means staying attuned to the unique systemic and interpersonal challenges they face, while creating therapeutic spaces where identity is respected, not questioned.

Pride Month is a reminder to hold space for stories that have not always been told safely, advocating for equity in mental health access, and fostering a world that recognizes and affirms all identities. 🤍🩷🩵🤎🖤

We highlight Equality Illinois, who serves to defend the basic human rights of LGBTQ+ members through healthcare, education, and criminal justice.

We hosted our first mental health research forum and mixer event our team, trusted partners, and new connections ... we learned, discussed, and honored the Arab American culture. Our presenters. Dr. Sarah Abboud, UIC Professor, and Community Health Researcher, Noor, shared their research on SWANA Racial/Ethnic Identity in the United States, health disparities and mental health challenges, and provided us with the opportunity for Q&A and discussion centered on considerations in clinical work while enjoying food from a local Middle Eastern restaurant.✨💛

This Arab American Heritage Month, we uplift the powerful legacy of Arab activism, culture, and resilience. In the face of today’s challenging political climate, Arab Americans continue to lead, create, and advocate for justice. Your contributions shape movements, art, and the future. We see you. We honor you. ✨

In Celebration of Arab American Heritage Month, Emerge highlights the Arab American Action Network (AAAN) … Since 1995, AAAN has been working to strengthen the Arab community of Chicago through community organization, advocacy, education, providing social services, and leadership and community building to better provide cultural and economic opportunities within a context of equality and social justice.
