Pew research indicates between 2019 and 2021 gun deaths in children went up 50% to a total of 2,590.

ABC reports since Feb. of 2024 , 4,994 people have died from gun deaths. The average is 108 deaths a day of which 147 were teens and 31 were children.

Everytown USA states," Fi****ms are the leading cause of death for American children and teens." A statement which the CDC agrees with.

Please read this for what it is, a set of statements about the incredible loss our youth are dealing with. Sometimes It Takes An Elephant is one attempt to help adults and children to begin conversations about how to heal from these losses !

Working with We Honor Veterans is how this book came into being. US Department of Defense Casualty Status report is where I got these statistics :Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003-2010 4418 dead. Operation Enduring Freedom 2001- 2014 2354 dead (not sure if these first two over lap) Operation New Dawn 2010-2011 74 deaths( again these last two were listed separately) . Defense Causality Analysis System: Operation Inherent Resolve June 2024 90 deaths,
Operation Freedoms Sentinel June 2024 32 deaths.
The Depart. of Defense has no system set up to aid families, spouses or children of the fallen in their loss and grief.

Some quick facts about loss and children. NPR reports estimate between 2011 and 2021 , 321,000 children have lost a parent to drug overdose.
Between 2020 and 2021 more than 140,000 children lost a parent figure to CoVid 19. More specifically 1 in 500 children experienced associated orphanhood due to the death of a parent or grand parent caregiver. ( Pediatrics , DOI:10.1542/peds.2021)

It's been awhile friends. Lately I've been contemplating on the word grief as a verb versus a noun. If grief is something we do, then it can be done actively, at the gym, planting a tree, talking about a loved one, dancing.
