There are a LOT of questions in regards to whether allergic individuals are able to get the 1st Pfizer COVID vaccine and what/if any risk this may impose. 💉

The CDC has approached this issue based on evidence based medicine (🙏🏻👏🏻)

*If you have a food, latex, venom, environmental or medication allergy—> you are in the clear for getting the vaccine! (No latex or preservatives were used, including thimerosal)

*If you have ever had prior anaphylaxis to a vaccine/injected medication, then you should get the COVID vaccine in a facility that is capable of recognizing and treating anaphylaxis (i.e. epinephrine) and observed for 20-30 minutes.

*If you have an allergy to the specific ingredients in the Pfizer vaccine, then you should avoid (though this would be very unlikely).

Ingredient list:
mRNA
Lipids (4- hydroxybutyl)azabediyl)bis(hexane-6,1-diyl)bis(2-hexyldecanoate), 2
[(polyethylene glycol)-2000]-N, N- ditetradecylacetamide, 1, 2-Distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phophocholine, and cholesterol)
potassium chloride
Monobasic potassium
Phosphate
Sodium chloride
Dibasic sodium phosphate dehydrate
Sucrose

Allergic reactions to vaccines, in general, are rare with the incidence of anaphylaxis ~1.31 in 1 million doses given. 💫

As always, discuss your specific concerns/questions with your healthcare professional so you can understand the risks and benefits, and make a decision that is best for you. ❤️🙌🏻

I get asked all the time, which epinephrine auto-injector is the “best?”

There are several brands out there, and whether it is, EpiPen, AUVI-Q, Adrenaclick or a generic— they all work the SAME!

Epinephrine (adrenaline) is the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis— not Benadryl, not Zyrtec and not oral steroids. Epinephrine is the only medication to fully reverse a severe allergic reaction.

Make sure you and your other caregivers (think grandparents, babysitters, etc.) know HOW to recognize a potentially life-threatening food allergy reaction (anaphylaxis), know HOW to properly administer epinephrine, and have a written food allergy anaphylaxis plan with your allergist. If you are not sure about any of the above, ASK your allergist. It is completely understandable to be nervous about using these pre-filled syringes, but that is why I want you to be comfortable using them, so if there is an emergency, it is not necessarily the first time you have taken them out of the box.

Think being prepared vs. being scared. A food allergy diagnosis is already pretty scary to any parent or child. In a true emergency, it is natural to panic, and that’s why I try to remove any elements of surprise or feelings of unpreparedness, if possible.

Remember to carry two epinephrine auto-injectors with you/your child at all times. A small percentage of people may need an additional dose before EMS arrives.

When in doubt, use epinephrine!

Did you know?

*These 8 allergens are responsible for the majority of all food allergy reactions.

*I get asked all the time, “which nuts are tree nuts?”
Tree nuts include: almond, brazil nut, cashew, walnut, pecan, hazelnut, and pistachio. Coconut is a FRUIT. Pine nut and macadamia nuts, are, in fact SEEDS. Nutmeg, water chestnut, butternut squash and shea nuts are NOT tree nuts (even though they contain the word nut).

*What is considered “finned fish?”
Finned fish includes: salmon, tuna, cod, halibut, etc.

*What is considered “shellfish?”
Shellfish can be broken into 2 categories: crustaceans and mollusks. Crustaceans include shrimp, crab, lobster, crawfish and prawns. Mollusks include squid, oyster, mussels, clams, octopus.

Remember: just because these 8 allergens are the MOST common, does not mean you or your child cannot be allergic to other foods. If you think your child is having an allergic reaction to other foods, ASK YOUR ALLERGIST.

*Egg, milk, wheat and soy are commonly outgrown by adolescence (majority sooner).
*20% of children outgrow peanut allergy (1 in 5)
*20% of children outgrow tree nut allergy (1 in 10)
