Conflict in relationships is not the problem, but how we fight is.

🌿 High conflict is a protective response that pulls us into blame, power struggles, and cycles that leave us feeling stuck or disconnected.

🪴 Generative conflict creates space for deeper understanding and more secure connection over time.

HTV therapists can help families and couples understand what’s happening underneath the surface and build new tools for communication and repair 🧡

There is a better way to fight.

🍃 Generative conflict is when we engage conflict in ways that generate more possibilities, greater connection, and fuller expression, instead of shutting things down.

Follow along as we dig deeper into how conflict can become a pathway to connection instead of disconnection 💛

Active hope is a practice that helps us act with intention and care, even when outcomes are uncertain.

🪴 It asks us to take a clear view of reality, recognize what we hope for, and take steps to move ourselves or our situations in that direction.

To explore how hope and grief can coexist, check out Active Hope by Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone and Let This Radicalize You by Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba 📗

Now is not the time to stay cool, calm, and collected.

🌱 We need to lean into the anger, rage, anxiety, sadness, and grief that we are all feeling.

🌿Feeling your emotions doesn’t mean they won’t overwhelm you, but once we navigate that fear, we can channel that energy as fuel for action.

🌻 Hope and grief can coexist, and we can still choose what we stand for, no matter the outcome.

Follow and share as we continue exploring how to hold grief, rage, and hope when the world feels like a dumpster fire 🧡

In every relationship, mistakes are human, but how we respond makes all the difference in repairing trust and rebuilding connection.

🪴An excuse says, “This isn’t my responsibility, and I’m not going to do anything about it.”

🌿 An explanation says, “I see how this impacts you, and here’s what I’m doing to take ownership and prevent it in the future.”

Example: “My ADHD makes time very challenging for me, and I recognize the many ways this impacts you and our relationship. I’m working with my therapist and ADHD group to try new strategies and reduce that impact.”

🌻 Explanations give context, reframe misunderstandings, and create opportunities for repair, without dodging responsibility.

Because neurotypical (NT) partners are in a place of privilege, it’s necessary for them to understand how their neurodivergent (ND) partner’s brain works and work together on accommodations.
🌸 Accommodations aren’t special treatment, but tools that help inter-neurotype relationships feel more equitable and supportive.

🌱 It’s not the NT partner’s job to “fix” their ND partner or make them less emotional but learn to meet them where they are.

For a deeper dive, we recommend reading Loving Someone with AuDHD by Mildred Kathryn Hardy 📖

Inter-neurotype couples are relationships where one partner is neurotypical (NT) and the other is neurodivergent (ND).

🌻 Even when it isn’t obvious from the outside, ableism and power dynamics can still show up and affect core parts of the relationship, like communication, planning, emotional regulation, and daily routines.

Our therapists can help inter-neurotype couples create shared language, build effective communication systems, and address ableism to foster more equitable and connected relationships 💚

“Imperialist white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy” is a phrase you might often hear in sessions at HTV, which is one of many important frameworks from bell hooks that informs our approach to therapy.

🌿 hooks reminds us that oppressive systems shape every part of our lives, including how we are expected to show up in our relationships.

Whether you’re seeking individual or relational therapy, our therapists are committed to justice-rooted work and regularly examine how systems of power and oppression impact our clients 🧡

Let’s talk about bell hooks: revolutionary thinker, activist, and the theoretical soulmate of HTV!

🪴 hooks’s work challenged systems of patriarchy, racism, capitalism, and imperialism, showing how these structures impact relationships, selfhood, and communities, especially for women and marginalized groups.

In the last few weeks of Women’s History Month, we will explore more of her work and enduring impact on therapy and social justice 💙

We had a great time connecting with fellow MFTs at annual conference!

✏️ Dr. Rachel Miller (), LMFT and founder of HTV, drew an incredible audience with her workshop Rooted and Integrated: Building a Cohesive Theoretical Framework for Practice.

🖋️ Michela Stevenson (), ALMFT and therapist at HTV, captivated attendees with Couples in Postpartum Transition: Navigating Relational Challenges in the Wake of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders.

We’re so proud of Dr. Rachel and Michela for sharing their expertise and making a lasting impact on Illinois’s Marriage and Family Therapy community, and beyond! 💛

Virginia Satir’s Five Freedoms are a cornerstone of her humanistic, growth-oriented therapy and reflect what everyone has the right to experience and practice.

🧡 We can only begin to work through our struggles when we see reality as it is.
🧡 We do not have to constantly worry about what others think of us, and we deserve to be ourselves.
🧡 We cannot deny our feelings without denying an important part of who we are.
🧡 We deserve to have our core needs met and the ability to communicate them to others.
🧡 We grow by challenging ourselves to take healthy risks and learn from new experiences.

Comment below which freedom is resonating with you today 💭
