As we go back to school here are some tips for taking notes and studying for our older kids from a person who has ADHD. Each person is different and some of these may work for your child but each person has their own ways of learning.

1. Cursive writing- kept up with my brain and kept me concentrating
1. Color code by importance
a. Example easy to knock out stuff in green
2. Lists of projects that week and in priority
3. Motivating breaks when you get to a certain point
a. Examples Dance breaks
b. Video breaks
c. Pet your animals
4. Review/Quiz yourself while in line or while doing chores
5. Sitting in a place without distractions
6. Moving fidgets/ distractions (salt shakers, pens, stacking items) out of the way unless fidgets are helping
7. Using appropriate fidgets and movement breaks
8. Reread notes
9. Rewrite notes
a. Helps with color coding
b. Understanding/ ask questions if needed
c. Re-writing helps form connections in the brain and helps you remember it
10. Pneumonic devices particularly for long ideas
11. Increase exercising before/ after and during if needed
12. Avoid sugary cereal instead maybe oatmeal bars for the car or quick meals/ snacks
13. Gum/ mints at home

As a new school approaches, it may be difficult for children to adjust to a change in their routine. A social story is a great way to help children anticipate the changes in routine and learn the expectations of going back to school. Use the following link to locate a printable social story about going back to school. There are two versions available, for female and male teachers! We recommend reading the story with your child once a day to prepare them for the upcoming school year!

Our Back to School Social Story will prepare your student with autism for his new classroom and teacher. Free download!

The Fourth of July can be fun and exciting but it can be overwhelming with sudden sounds, increase smells or sights, and increased amount of people. Here are tips to help a sensory friendly experience

1) Prepare your child for the day
Watch videos of parades or fireworks and gradually increase the sound to see your child's reaction
Read stories about the fourth of July, fireworks, or parades,
Count down on a calendar
Talk out the day and potential plans
Visual or written schedules of what the day may look like

2) Engage in heavy work activities or deep pressure activities before, during, and after as needed.
Pushing, pulling, lifting, chewing, and squeezing are all heavy work activities that can be done before hand
Massage, squeezes, joint compressions
Helping with set up ( packing a picnic basket, loading the car, hanging up decorations)
Weighted vests or blankets/ tighter clothing

3) Bring favorite and familiar items/ Preferred sensory input
Familiar toys, games and snacks
Fidget toys
Oral motor stimulators/ chew jewelry
Comfortable clothing without tags or known triggers

4) Prepare ways to decrease input
Noise blocking headphones
Headphones with preferred music or background sounds
Sunglasses for bright lights
Fans, water bottles, sq**rt bottles, hats to decrease effects from the heat

5) Establish a safe place for breaks or relief from the noise and people
Small tents or blanket to hide under
Stay by the car or be able to retreat to the car if needed
Have your child communicate they need a break, Create a safe word, and observe signs that they are overwhelmed and are unable to communicate it

6) Create a holiday tradition that is unique to your family
Play in the pool or sprinkler at home
Draw, color, create a craft
Create 4th of July themed sensory bins
Have a Fourth of July Scavenger hunt
