Joe’s journey began with a frightening fall far from home. The Advocate Christ Medical Center team surrounded him and his wife, Terri, with expert care and heartfelt support. Moved by the experience, Terri made a generous gift to Advocate Christ’s Nursing Research, Education and Wellness Fund — directed to the nurses on 4West, where Joe received his care.

Gratitude goes a long way. 💙

Advocate Health Care is supported by the generosity of donors like Terri. Whether it was a steady hand in surgery, a kind word at the bedside, or a friendly guide through the halls — our teams are there when it matters most. Join us in celebrating the incredible care teams who make a difference in the lives of patients and families across our communities.

A very special tribute is taking place this weekend in New York City’s Times Square!

Katie has dedicated her life and career to supporting the Down syndrome community as an occupational therapist at the Advocate Medical Group Adult Down Syndrome Center in Park Ridge. Her inspiration? Her younger sister, Tori.

Tori, who had Down syndrome, passed away in 1987 just before her 3rd birthday. Even in those short three years, she left an incredible mark on Katie’s life, and she still keeps Tori’s photos close by on her desk and bulletin board, reminders of the love and motivation that continue to guide her work.

Tori’s photo will be featured in Times Square as part of the National Down Syndrome Society's annual video presentation, a powerful moment that honors Tori’s legacy and Katie’s lifelong dedication to this community. Selected from more than 2,600 submissions, Tori’s image will be one of 500+ in this national tribute to individuals with Down syndrome.

"It means so much to be recognized and to be able to honor my sister, because she really is the reason that I do what I do," Katie shares.

This moment is not only a celebration of Tori’s life, but also of Katie’s commitment to helping individuals with Down syndrome and their families thrive.

Angelica, Nurse of the Year for Advocate Medical Group, is a Registered Nurse at the Advocate Medical Group Neurosurgery Clinic in Park Ridge. With just over two years of experience, she actively engages with patients, addressing their physical, mental and emotional needs, and has developed innovative strategies to track pre-op and post-op requirements. She has played a key role in creating onboarding materials for new nurses in her department, showcasing her dedication to professional development and teamwork.

“My mother has been a nurse for more than 20 years, and she continues to be my biggest inspiration. My family and I immigrated here from the Philippines in 2006. The nursing profession has allowed my family and me to immigrate here and has created more opportunities for us. I like to think my mother is the epitome of a great nurse, and I strive to be just like her! I continue to learn, hoping to become the best version of myself for my patients, which fuels my passion for nursing.”

When Erika became pregnant in 2020, not long after moving back to the Chicago area, she began searching for the right maternity care team. At her cousin's recommendation, she connected with the midwifery program at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital — and what started as a referral quickly turned into a life-changing relationship.

With the support of her certified nurse midwife, Ania Mikos, and the entire care team, Erika delivered her two daughters at Lutheran General in 2021 and 2023. During her third pregnancy, Erika experienced the heartbreak of a miscarriage. Ania and the midwifery team were there for her every step of the way, offering not just clinical care, but also compassion and comfort through one of the most difficult moments of her life.

A few months later, when Erika learned she was expecting again, the midwifery team helped to ease the anxiety of navigating pregnancy after a loss. Erika felt reassured and empowered throughout her journey and welcomed her rainbow baby boy in June.

"It's a privilege to be such an integral part of a patient's journey, through the joys, the heartbreaks and everything in between," Ania says. "Building trust and forming connections with families is foundational to what we do and allows us to provide the best possible care."

Erika describes the midwifery program as “thoughtful, compassionate and deeply personal” and says she always felt cared for at every stage, from prenatal to delivery to postpartum. “Ania is probably the best provider I’ve ever had in my life,” she says. “Every time I walked into that office, I knew I was in the best hands."

Erika’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact a dedicated care team can have — and why so many families choose Advocate Health Care for their maternity care.

Kudos to Dr. Steven Schaefer and the team at Advocate Christ Medical Center for recently completing their 100th radiofrequency ablation (RFA). The minimally invasive outpatient procedure offers several benefits for patients undergoing treatment of thyroid nodules, including preserved thyroid function, reduced scarring and accelerated recovery.

“These benefits make RFA a preferred choice for patients seeking a less invasive and more effective treatment option for benign thyroid nodules,” Dr. Schaefer explains.

When Ken came to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in October 2023 for clinical withdraw from alcohol, he also found a life-changing chance to reclaim his health. Due to his weight, he knew he needed to lose weight and have his knees and hips replaced. Thanks to encouragement and bond he made with his care team, including Betsy, one of his nurses, he stopped drinking that day and was able to begin his weight loss journey. Since then, Dr. Bradley Zarling was able to replace his right knee and left hip, and Dr. Allen Mikhail and Dr. Jeffrey Rosen were able to perform bariatric surgery.

"If it weren't for Betsy and my entire care team, I wouldn't be where I am today," Ken said. "I am thankful for the doctors who helped me recover and have allowed my life to thrive once again."
