Hundreds of students and families got a head start on back-to-school season at Advocate Trinity Hospital’s annual Gym Shoe Ball and health event on the South Side!

To help South Side families prepare for the new school year and show support, hospital teammates and clinicians: distributed 200+ backpacks & 100 produce boxes, $19,000 in scholarships went to 30 aspiring health care workers, free sports physicals, health screenings, CPR training & wellness education and career exploration with our recruitment-on-wheels van!

“We are committed to improving the health and well-being of our communities,” said Dr. Michelle Y. Blakely. “This event helps us connect residents with caregivers and provide education, preventive screenings and more.”

This celebration is part of our $1B investment in building a new model of care on Chicago’s South Side — including $25M dedicated to workforce development and hiring 1,000 new teammates in the next 3 years. 💙

Brittany, Nurse of the Year at Advocate Sherman Hospital, is a charge nurse and the first staff-nominated Nurse Staff President of Professional Governance at Sherman. Brittany is a strong advocate for evidence-based practice and actively promotes professional development and staff autonomy through Professional Governance. She has strengthened unit-based councils, fostering collaboration and supporting unit-level leadership to improve patient care and communication. She initiated the first night shift unit-based council and created valuable resources. Her commitment to continuous professional development, including certification in medical-surgical nursing and ultrasound-guided IV insertion, has a positive impact on patient care.

“Professional Governance has been a huge catalyst in my professional growth. I started our Unit Based Council for our unit in 2018 and joined our hospital practice council. From there, I became Chair of the Practice Council and was elected as Advocate Sherman’s first Nursing Staff President in 2022. I've been so grateful for those opportunities. I believe those experiences will help me continue to grow.”

Clark's journey with prostate cancer began shortly before his annual primary care visit when he started experiencing symptoms. His prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test revealed a dangerously elevated score, prompting a referral to a urologist. Further scans and a biopsy revealed that 75% of his prostate contained cancer, which had spread to his spine. Clark was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer and underwent radiation therapy in the spring, followed by aggressive chemotherapy in the winter. As of February, his PSA levels are undetectable, indicating that his cancer is under control, and recent scans show no signs of further spread.

Prostate cancer has deeply impacted Clark's life; his father passed away from the disease at age 60. Now, having survived his own battle, Clark is passionate about raising awareness and encouraging regular screenings. “Men tend to joke about this stuff, but cancer is serious and it’s not something to take lightly,” shared Clark. “Talk to your physician and make sure you're getting your PSA checked regularly. Every man should stay on top of it, it's too important not to."

Clark, a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, had the honor of throwing the first pitch for the Father's Day Cubs game. He was joined at the game by his wife, son and grandson, making the celebration even more meaningful.

Kudos to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for successfully completing its 100th transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) — a leading-edge procedure for treating carotid artery disease, the narrowing or blockage of the major blood vessels in the neck.

TCAR uses a sheath to temporarily reverse the direction of the blood flow while a stent is placed to open the artery. Loose plaque is diverted away from the brain and captured in a filter outside the body, reducing the risk of stroke and other complications. The approach is also less invasive and has a faster recovery time compared to open surgery.

“Our experience with TCAR has been overwhelmingly positive," said vascular surgeon Dr. Chad Jacobs, who performed the milestone procedure with Dr. Robert Weiss. "This hybrid approach combines surgical and endovascular techniques, resulting in a safe, effective treatment that enhances how we care for patients with carotid artery disease."

Dr. Daniel Ahmad, an interventional cardiologist, and the team at Advocate Sherman Hospital recently performed their first retrograde coronary chronic total occlusions. CTOs are 100% blockages of the coronary arteries. They can be the result of prior heart attacks and can persist for months to years resulting in symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath, low exercise capacity, fatigue and even depression. Opening these blockages are higher risk procedures that involve specialized equipment beyond what is ordinarily used for heart stent procedures.

"CTO interventions can offer patients better quality of life when medications do not help and when open heart bypass surgery is not possible nor the best option," Ahmad said. "Many patients with these challenging blockages are unfortunately turned away by their cardiologists or have repeated coronary angiograms and are told there is no other option for them. Although this procedure may not be meant for everyone, there are select patients that can truly benefit from this treatment."
