MUSC MSK 1 lab 💪🏻

I am an privileged enough to be an adjunct faculty member in a few DPT programs. I spent this past week with MUSC hybrid DPT in Charleston helping with their MSK 1 lab intensive.

Here's a tiny recap of the week getting familiar with hip and knee exam and intervention, culminating in the students first MSK practical exam. They were so nervous, but their hard work and preparation paid off. 🙏

It's a CRAZY reminder of how steep the learning curve is. And how much knowledge is required to truly understand how to help people with complex health conditions.

It ain't easy! But these students did an awesome job 👏🏻

Last CSM Recap post...

This year really was different.

I've been to a lot of CSM conferences since I was a first year DPT student in 2012. In fact, this was my 10th yr attending. Prior to this year, I was starting to notice some concerning trends that made me want to invest my time and money elsewhere. I didn't even want to attend this year, but I was asked to contribute to several sessions - 2 of those were selected.

And the conference delivered. Drew Contreras called it out in a recent LinkedIn Post. There's an appreciable shift... we're in a pivotal moment in our professions history. And against all odds, people are starting to embrace that we NEED to pivot and getting excited about it.

These photos capture just a handful of colleagues that I was able to connect with!

And how fun to bump into my former neuro professor from Temple who carried the beaming glow of being newly retired! Congrats!

CSM recap 1... of many.

Special shoutout to my new friend Dr. Nica Jacobson. Nica came to my CSM session this past Saturday on Doctoring in Physical Therapy - she made a point to introduce herself after the session and the exchange brought tears to my eyes 🥹. While I can't remember the exact words, it was something along the lines of... "I had a feeling I should come to CSM this year but didn't know what I was looking for or why I had this feeling, but this was it. This is exactly what I want to do and where I want to go." She proceeded to thank me for all my work in this area and THAT was what I needed to hear. I needed her words just as much as she felt she needed mine....

Pioneering kind of sucks a lot of the time. Its lonely, confusing, often thankless and plagued by highs and lows - endless hope, followed by drowning doubt.

But this is why I'm here making waves - to inspire and to create a positive impact for the future. REAL positive, meaningful and sustainable change.

Bc healthcare right now sucks. It won't be there when we need it to be unless we put in the work...

Hope to see you there!

I'm going to get real here for a hot sec - Too often, I skip social media posts because my hair isn't perfect and I'm not wearing mascara, or I'm in bum clothes or need to get my eyebrows done. I workout and go for walks throughout the day, so there's not that many opportunities to record videos when I feel like my appearance is good enough. But today... I just decided to put this out there anyway. Because I think I'm the only one who probably cares!

This is my life as a solo PT, educator, advocate and entrepreneur with 2 young boys and a house full of craziness. Is there any time... ever? To do.... anything? NOPE. But I wouldn't trade it!

But I still gotta get the word out about my stuff, amiright?

Just doing it.

Note the sticker! Come find me at CSM to claim yours!

And I know. I've been a tad quiet for a few weeks. Stuff got real! Just this week alone - heating issues, pipe burst, major MAJOR health scare in a kid, that turned out to be an inaccurate lab test result... and SO MUCH COLD. 🥶 All this combined with feeling like the world isn't ready to share my vision in primary care PT.

Despite the craziness and the doubt (not my doubt)... persevere. Because I 💖Primary Care PT.

And those that are ready, I am HERE for it! LET'S GOOOOOOO!!!!!

I had the most incredible, serendipitous weekend in Jacksonville, FL! Without telling a longer personal story, I ended up in Jacksonville with my family from Buffalo this weekend - scheduled BEFORE the bills were scheduled to be here.

Since I knew I was coming, I reached out to and we finally had a chance to meet in person! Such a great chance to catch up with a fellow woman entrepreneur PT baddie! 💪🏻

AND THEN.... The Bills ended up here for wildcard weekend! We all made a last minute decision to get tickets to the game... best decision ever!

Sending love to jags fans - they were all very friendly and cordial and I FEEL for your loss.

But go bills!!!

3 reasons why primary care PT matters and why it is absolutely essential that you integrate this model into your health system.

#1. It improves access to care - Primary care PT expands frontline capacity for musculoskeletal conditions which is one of the most common reasons patients seek care. Offering access to PTs at the primary care level ensures that patients with MSK needs receive faster access to appropriate care, reducing strain and administrative burden on physicians.

#2. It offers the highest value - Evidence consistently shows that early access to PT lowers total cost of care while maintaining or improving outcomes. Primary care PT emphasizes appropriate imaging, conservative management, and right-time referrals—key drivers of value-based performance.

And finally #3. It Creates Strategic Growth Opportunities for Organizations - Primary care PT enables early access and surveillance care models that differentiate organizations in competitive markets. It also positions PT as a solution to workforce shortages and evolving primary care demands.

In this healthcare landscape, shifting to primary care is not a question. It's an absolute. Jump on board in our Primary Care PT start-up workshop for business leaders!

In the new Clinical Foundations for the Primary Care PT part 1, one of the things I was very intentional about was drawing awareness to the important contextual factors associated with the initial patient interview - like consistent flow, the verbal and physical language used, the space you're in and how you respond to the patient's story. AND the efficiency associated with it. Oftentimes, this is an area that separates average from expert level practice... which is why we focus on it!

The 'HOW' is important!

These are just a couple slides from a big module on the subjective interview.
