Sometimes you're stuck on a bus with a toddler who didn't take a long enough afternoon nap. Try this to keep them busy and relatively happy (screen-free)...

🎵 Sing a song they like. "Wheels on the Bus" is perfect! Toddlers love doing all the movements and sounds, and you can keep adding verses as long as they're interested.

🚍 Talk about where you're going, encourage them to listen for your stop, and get ready to pull the cord or push the button. So fun for kids!

👵 There is always an older lady who wants to chat with your child. Let them entertain him or her! If you're lucky, you'll get someone who wants to make silly faces and sounds while you take a breather. The interaction might just brighten everyone's day. ❤️

Last week we did a family vacation in Michigan. In one cute town, Bridgman, we found a wonderful coffee shop called ! They have a beautiful mission and provide an inclusive gathering and play place.

Their website states:
Rising Kites Coffee provides employment and job training opportunities to individuals with intellectual disabilities while fostering an inclusive environment in which all individuals are encouraged to see the gift that people with disabilities are to our world. ❤️

Check them out if you're in the area or padding through!

Get that toy 🆙 off the floor and near your face when you're teaching little ones language.

When I made this simple shift in a therapy session, the child's engagement kicked up a notch and he started watching my mouth move and my facial expressions change. 😀

👉 Visuals are a super useful tool in communication!

For your toddler who is learning loads of vocabulary and figuring out how to effectively convey their wants and needs, put food packaging to good use by taping it to the kitchen wall or pantry door. When they want something to eat, they can touch, point to, or name the item with the help of the visual. Then you model the name of the food and give it to them! Yum!

"Cheerios! You want Cheerios! Ok, let's eat Cheerios."

I'd add string cheese and yogurt to the fridge door for my toddler...what foods would you include?

Farm day in Early Expressions! 🐴🐄🐖

We made LOTS of animal sounds, sang Old MacDonald, played with the barn (knock knock, OPEN the door!), fed the puzzle piece animals, and read books.

👉 Tip: in lift-the-flap books that say "Who is hiding behind the door?" ignore the question and instead say, "It's a ... (generous pause)...COW!"

See if your child fills it in and if not, pause then model the word. So much more fun than quizzing! 👍

A whopping ELEVEN toddlers joined for today's class ! There was some amazing caregiver involvement. The energy was SO good! 😄

Our theme, body parts, had us moving and grooving right away as we sang Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes. 🦶

We then read "Eyes, Nose, Toes, Peekaboo!" 🙈

But the highlight was washing the baby doll in the bathtub...

One little girl squeezed in the soap, a few kids helped pour the water, and several took turns washing the baby with a loofah. 🧽

We sang to the baby:
"This is the way we wash your tummy, wash your tummy, wash your tummy, this is the way we wash your tummy in the bathtub."

Then we dried the baby with washcloths, and we sang:
"Dry, dry, dry you off, make you nice and dry! Dry, dry, dry you off, now you're nice and dry." (Row Your Boat melody)

Try these songs during your little one's bath routine to make it fun and to teach them the parts of their body!

🏙️ As my 4-year-old and I approached a very busy Chicago playground yesterday, I ran through our "getting lost" role-play with her to make sure we are prepared in case she and I get separated. Swipe through to see our conversation ➡️

I started teaching her my phone number when she was 2.5-3 years old.

🎵 Tip: teach it in a melody (brains are really good at recalling information that we sing). I used a section of the alphabet song/Twinkle Twinkle because it came to mind quickest!
