Think gout is no longer an issue once the acute flare resolves? Not true. Chronic gout forms tophi in joints which can be seen here as the white, chalky deposits. This can cause pain, bone erosion, and can even cause ulceration if the amount of tophi weaken the overlying skin. Patients with gout need proper lifestyle and medical management to ensure prevention and/or resolution of these large tophi. Podiatrists, primary care physicians, and rheumatologists play a crucial role in keeping these patients healthy.
Note: This surgery was not being performed because of gout, but Dr. Busser found a large amount of tophi in the joint and wanted to share for educational purposes.
