In February 2025, the Carle Health Arrow Ambulance Crew of Paramedics Joe Blew and Adam Harris arrived on the scene of a severe single-occupant car accident that took place in rural Danville

As Blew attempted to check the unconscious driver for a pulse, the vehicle abruptly burst into flames. Without hesitation, Blew and Harris worked with a team of officers to remove the driver through the window of the enflamed vehicle just seconds before flames overtook the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

Thanks to Blew and Harris’ quick actions and utilization of lifesaving skills, the driver was able to receive the medical treatment he needed and survived the life-threatening incident.

This past week, the American Red Cross was proud to honor the team for their extraordinary courage with Certificates of Extraordinary Personal Action for their decisive actions during the crisis.

“Joe and Adam's incredible actions and quick response showcased their bravery, compassion and willingness to step up and help those in need,” said Lyn Hruska, Executive Director for the Central Illinois Chapter of the Red Cross.

Red Cross training equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to act in an emergency and save a life. A variety of online, blended (online and in-person skills sessions), and classroom courses are available at redcross.org/takeaclass.

Volunteer of the Week: Gani Maiyaki, Chicago, Illinois

For ten years, Gani Maiyaki has been a steady source of compassion and support for the Chicago community through his volunteer work with the American Red Cross.

For him, volunteering is simple at its core: “The Red Cross allows you to assist people when they need it most," said Gani when asked about why he serves.

Gani’s journey with the Red Cross began long before he arrived in Chicago. As a teenager in Nigeria, he discovered the power of service and the impact a single person can make. That early experience shaped him and those memories have kept him going, today he continues that commitment as a proud Red Crosser in the United States.

He gives his time wherever help is needed: supporting community events, assisting at blood drives, and responding to home fires to ensure families are not alone in their first moments of crisis.

Gani says the red vest represents compassion, kindness, and the promise that no neighbor will face hardship without someone by their side.

He hopes others will take that first step into service, just as he once did. “The Red Cross is a worldwide organization,” he says. “We need more volunteers, and anyone can make a difference.”

♥️ Are you inspired by Gani’s example?

During a severe blood shortage, donors like Rachel Sprout make all the difference to those in need of lifesaving blood. Rachel regularly donates in honor of her father, who passed away in 2015 from Multiple Myeloma.

"He received multiple blood transfusions throughout his treatment," Rachel said. "He's the reason why I started donating. Those blood transfusions helped him quite a bit throughout his treatment, so I figured if I can give back and help others then I definitely will."

Now's your to follow Rachel's lead and give back to those in need by rolling up and sleeve and donating blood on Saturday, February 21 at the Army National Guard Blood Drive in Bloomington from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.!

Seconds count in emergencies, and it’s the blood already on hospital shelves that helps save lives — Make your appointment to donate by visiting https://rdcrss.org/42q1J8J

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than by sharing love that reaches far beyond your own circle?

Linda and Don are a true power couple who choose to show up, together, to make sure families impacted by home fires and other disasters don’t face their darkest moments alone. With every shift, they bring compassion, kindness, and hope to neighbors who need it most.

“It gives us a chance to make a real difference when people need help the most,” Linda shared. “Whether it’s responding to disasters, supporting blood drives, or helping families recover after emergencies, the work feels meaningful and immediate. I’m proud to be part of an organization built on compassion, service, and teamwork.”

Don adds beautifully: “She cares about how I feel, and life feels better with her.”

Volunteers are the heart of the American Red Cross, and there’s room for you (and your Valentine), too. Whether you’re comforting a displaced family, supporting a service member or veteran, or helping teach lifesaving skills, people like you make extraordinary compassion possible.

This Valentine’s Day, show your love in a powerful way -- give a piece of your heart to someone in need. ❤️

🍪 Operation Cookie Drop is in full swing 🍪

Yesterday, these dedicated Red Crossers came together to organize and package boxes of delicious cookies that will be delivered to some of the many fire departments that help us provide services to families and individuals in need throughout the community!

Each department they visit will also receive important information on how the Red Cross can help those that have been impacted by home fires and disasters in their service area.

Thank you to each and every volunteer who has played a part in making sure those in need, have access to critical services following a disaster! 💕

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and we are excited to celebrate some of the dedicated Red Cross couples who always lead with their hearts! ❤️

Ed and Mary Johnson truly exemplify what it means to deliver the Red Cross Mission — from serving on and supporting the South & West Central Illinois Board, to delivering comfort and care to those in need following a home fire, to installing smoke alarms throughout their community and even deploying across the country to help others following a disaster — We are so thankful for the work they do!

"I think there's an advantage to doing this work as a couple," Mary said. "We do have that routine and we know our roles together, it's a really good thing to do together."

"When we get on scene of a disaster, I know that she's able to take care of being there for those we serve in an empathetic way and I'm able to do intake," Ed said. "It makes responding to those calls easier knowing what we are each going to do when we get there."

Volunteers make all the difference to those we serve! We thank Ed and Mary for the tireless work that they do to support the Red Cross and wish them a very Happy Valentine's Day!

Learn CPR. Save a Heart. Change a Story. ♥️

February is Heart Month, the American Red Cross urges people to take a CPR and first aid course to be ready for the moments that matter.

More Americans are caring for loved ones, but few feel prepared for emergencies.

Only about one-third of U.S. adults say they feel confident and ready to act if someone goes into cardiac arrest.

For more than 100 years, the American Red Cross has been a national leader in first aid education, training more than three million people per year in first aid, CPR and AED skills to help save lives in emergencies.
