We are incredibly grateful for our volunteers and staff who have been working tirelessly since New Year’s Day to support families impacted by the apartment fire in Abington.

Because of their compassion and commitment, dozens of people who were displaced from their homes are receiving warm meals, safe shelter, emotional support and the care they need during an incredibly difficult time.

This is the Red Cross mission in action — showing up when it matters most. Thank you to everyone who stepped in without hesitation to help our neighbors begin the road to recovery. ā¤ļø

January is National Blood Donor Month, a time to recognize the lifesaving impact of blood donors—and to inspire new ones.

At 84 years old, Darlene Hutchens took a brave first step by donating blood at the Great Chicago Blood Drive on the one-year anniversary of losing her husband, Al, who relied on lifesaving transfusions during cancer treatment. ā¤ļø

What began with hesitation became a powerful way to honor his memory and give hope to others facing the same fight. Darlene’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to make a difference and help save lives. Read her full story here: https://rdcrss.org/4p3KUrI

This National Blood Donor Month, you can follow Darlene’s example and help patients like Al by joining the Great Chicago Blood Drive, happening January 14–15, 2026, at six locations across Chicagoland.

When disasters strike, the American Red Cross responds with safe shelters, warm meals, emergency relief supplies and compassionate volunteers just like Terrence ā€˜Skip’ Cook and Sally Wilsey.

The two of them, with over 35 years of Red Cross experience between them, formed a sheltering team while deploying to Southern Illinois to assist with the Red Cross’ response to damaging storms and flooding.

While deployments are nothing new to Skip and Sally, who have each responded to wildfires, hurricanes and tornadoes throughout the country, each of them gladly took the opportunity to assist those in need in their own state of Illinois.

On May 16, the shrieking shrills of a severe weather warning came blaring through the speaker on Hannah’s cell phone and woke her from a sound sleep on the living room couch. Groggily she asked her dad, Ed, ā€œWhat’s going on?ā€

Ed switched on the television and caught a brief description of a tornado or funnel cloud reportedly on the ground — Seconds later the television signal was gone.

For what seemed like five minutes, the family heard the sound of snapping limbs and crashing trees outside their home. Two tree limbs crashed through the kitchen roof, while winds stripped off all the shingles on one side of the home and left the other side nearly untouched.

Through the power and support of volunteers, the Red Cross was able to provide assistance to Hannah, Ed and many more in the Marion area as they begin to assess the damage from the storms and begin down their path to recovery.

We are deeply grateful and truly humbled by the recognition from the Village of Carpentersville following the fire at a multi-unit apartment building that displaced dozens of residents.

In moments like these, the phrase ā€œit takes a villageā€ takes on real meaning. We witnessed community mobilization at its very best, as the Village of Carpentersville, dedicated Red Cross volunteers, and community partners came together quickly and compassionately to support neighbors in crisis. Through collaboration, care, and shared commitment, impacted residents were connected with critical resources and support as they began their recovery.

We are honored to stand alongside such a strong and caring community.
