For the second year in a row, Weiss Memorial Hospital partnered with the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois to host a KidneyMobile event, which provided free kidney screenings and comprehensive steps to kidney health for members of our community. We were honored to have the Malcolm X Medical Assistant students volunteer to provide screenings and to be joined in our efforts by the teams at Associates in Nephrology and Flourish Research.

Earlier this year, Weiss held a program focused on bone-loss risk factors, fracture prevention, and the latest treatments for osteoporosis. Thirty people attended the event in person with 11 more participating on the Zoom call.

Presenters were Thomas McNally, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon and Medical Director of the Spine Center (pictured on the right), who gave an overview on osteoporosis, including vertebral compression fractures; Nicole Butler, MD, Gynecologist at the Women’s Health Center (pictured on the left) who talked about bone health for pre- and post-menopausal women; dietician Annie Scott, RD, who discussed key nutrients for healthy bones and did a food demonstration providing advice on food choices and eating habits; and physical therapist Adilla Millwala, PT, who talked about the benefits of exercise for bone health. In addition, seven participants took advantage of the opportunity to have a DEXA scan that day.

Feedback from community participants was extremely positive, and two internal medicine residents who attended said it was an excellent learning opportunity.

Cardiovascular disease can take many forms. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women; one person dies every 36 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease.

A heart-healthy population is what we strive for at Resilience Healthcare, supported by our cardiologists, Dr. Amjad Sheikh at Weiss Memorial Hospital and Dr. Sabah Khan at West Suburban Medical Center.

February was American Heart Month, and the Resilience team took part in the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day to help raise awareness for heart disease.

Our Resilience Healthcare PT team celebrates National Physical Therapy Month 2024!

National Physical Therapy Month is celebrated in October to recognize the benefits of physical therapy and the work of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students. The PTs, PTAs, and student physical therapists at Resilience see patients in the acute care hospitals, the post-acute rehab units at Weiss Memorial Hospital and West Suburban Medical Center, and also the outpatient therapy clinics at Weiss and the River Forest Medical Campus. The profession focuses on movement patterns, exercises, and education to help people recover from injuries or health events and learn to manage their ongoing recovery independently.

Resilience Healthcare Nursing Education’s Gerri Kaye reflects on a recent Regional Educational Conference hosted by Weiss:

The Greater Chicago Area Chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (GCAC-AACN) sponsored a Regional Educational Conference hosted by Weiss Memorial Hospital in October. The program opened with a welcome and highlights of a Healthy Work Environment (HWE) by Andi Saviozzi, Executive Director of Nursing for both Weiss and West Suburban Medical Center.

The conference included several other key speakers who are also national presenters for various nursing organizations: Cynthia Gonzalez, who described the components of a HWE; Cheryl Herrmann, who focused on cardiac disease in women; and Pam Konrath, who discussed targeted temperature management post-cardiac arrest.

Almost 50 nurses, nursing students from Malcolm X College, and leadership staff from other nursing disciplines attended the conference. The success of the program was evident by extremely positive feedback and evaluations from the participants.

The GCAC-AACN greatly thanks Dr. Manoj Prasad and Resilience leadership for their support and generosity for the use of the facility for the conference.

Earlier in the year, the residents of The Breakers at Edgewater Beach senior community enjoyed conversations with Weiss otolaryngologist Evan S. Greenbaum, MD. Dr. Greenbaum offered an open-floor question-and-response approach, focusing on questions related to the head and neck. As the questions flowed, Dr. Greenbaum methodically responded as an ENT (ears, nose, and throat) specialist and redirected specific questions to additional specialists. He reminded the group that neck and head issues may need to be addressed by a specialist trained in neurology, orthopedics, and more. Thank you to Dr. Greenbaum for your time and this educational opportunity engaging our community members!

Resilience Healthcare helps our communities get ready for school!

West Suburban Medical Center hosted the West Side Pastors’ Coalition for AIDS & Inner City Health Back to School Health & Resource Fair on August 10th, which provided free backpacks and school supplies thanks to generous contributions from our team members. Our booth at the event highlighted some of the services we provide and was anchored by Charmaine Webb, RN (Stroke Care); Noemi Voda, RN (Wound Care); and Dr. Julie Kafka (Sports Medicine).

Weiss Memorial Hospital participated in the Back to School events at Brenneman School on August 21st. We were able to donate backpacks, pencils, markers, colored pencils, highlighters, erasers, pens, scissors, notebooks, glue, crayons, paper towels, folders, tissues, hand sanitizers, and disinfectant wipes. We want to thank all the Resilience employees who participated and hope the students of today will be our team members in the future!
