EASY “EDIBLE” SAND RECIPE!
-Sugar
-Food coloring
-Plastic Baggies

Pour sand into the bag, add food coloring, seal the bag, and shake. That’s it!! Add more food coloring to get a deeper hue. You can also blend graham crackers, sugar, and/or leftover cake bits into a good processor. You now have a safe alternative to sand for curious toddlers 👧🏼

We loved this video from ! If your child is having trouble sequencing or attending to all the steps of a complex obstacle course, try a simple, motivating movement opportunity first. Kids typically love jumping on the bed or crashing into a bean bag. Allow them to crash 5 or so times to ensure their buy in, then add running across the room or down the hall before jumping and crashing. Finally to add a visual motor component and some cognitive demand, add throwing the stuffed animal at a target at the end (in this case, a block tower!) You now have a three step motor sequence that includes gross motor skills like running and jumping, provides their nervous system with vestibular and proprioceptive input and has a visual motor activity that requires body and spatial awareness & modulation. But for your child- they are just having fun! 💛

On a bright & sunny day, our amazing OT Gina’s nephew planted a vegetable garden! This is a purposeful, heavy work activity kids can monitor over time. Use a small container to transfer dirt to the vegetable garden or flower bed, as this will increase the number of reps needed. A container that the child can grasp cylindrically is great for strengthening the intrinsic muscles in the hand, and transferring the dirt addresses upper extremity strength and stability while rotating the trunk. if you have a wheel barrow, this is wonderful to use for increasing the heavy work by pushing and dumping the dirt. Once planted, you can create jobs around the flowerbed like watering the plants, keeping your child busy longer and getting some vitamin D in the process! 🌱🌞

As the weather warms up this weekend, you may want to check out this great find from our OT, Kim! You can find the Ninjaline Portable Jungle Gym at Walmart, ($64). This works on upper body and core strength, rhythm, timing and so much more!

Need a sensory rich activity that also allows you to multitask around the house? Enter, dishwashing! Limit what materials are available that your child can manipulate safely, while also keeping them diverse. We like a firm brush, squishy sponge, soft rag and some bubbles! Notice here how our clinic director, Megan, raised up the floor of the sink to accommodate her son’s height and included a safe standing option for him. So proud of you, Danny! 😊

Tonights topic is directionality! Directionality is the ability to know the orientation of an object in relation to its position with another object. Directionality helps children understand the space around them in their everyday world and their relationship to it. For example, “Look Mom, I’m under the bed!” Directionality is the foundation for handwriting and spatial reasoning and is necessary for a well integrated body map. •

An easy way to work on directionality and make walks more fun is challenging your child to find 3 things they can go OVER, UNDER, & AROUND. Pick two colors (let’s say, green & yellow!) and see if they can find 3 green things to the LEFT of them, and 2 yellow things to the RIGHT. Your kids will move on purpose and deliberately during their walk, while addressing this foundational skill! Bonus words to consider- on top of, in between, through, & beside. Can’t wait to see what you come up with! 🌼

With the stay at home order extended through May 30th and parks closed, many families have reached out asking for suggestions on indoor equipment for their kids. We created this series of “Spend, Save, Splurge!” with ideas for different types of equipment for every budget.

SPEND: This resistance tunnel from southpaw is a great heavy work activity that provides proprioceptive, tactile, and deep touch input which is incredibly beneficial for developing body awareness and motor planning. It also provides tons of opportunities for sensory motor activities, see ideas under “save!”.

https://www.southpaw.com/resistance-tunnel.html

SAVE: This pop up tunnel from provides endless possibilities for movement. Crawling through the tunnel is great for shoulder stability and motor planning. Add pillows inside to add more proprioceptive input and increase the demand by adding multiple changes in planes. Hide stuffed animals throughout the pillows for a visual motor challenge. And best of all when you are done- you can collapse it in the carrying bag and store it away!

https://www.amazon.com/POCO-DIVO-Tunnel-Children-Pop-up/dp/B016OE0640/ref=sr_1_1?crid=RYHBFILMD6XT&dchild=1&keywords=poco+divo+6ft+play+tunnel&qid=1588006624&sprefix=poco+divo+%2Caps%2C499&sr=8-1

SPLURGE: A kid lite barrel from is a great addition to the resistance tunnel. You can stretch the tunnel over the barrel to allow for independent use and enhance spatial awareness. You can also use the barrel solo by having the child roll inside it (for strong vestibular input) walk on top of it (balance) or pushing up a ramp/slide or across the room (postural strength, heavy work).

Happy Monday! With the stay at home order extended through May 30th and parks closed, many families have reached out asking for suggestions on indoor equipment for their kids. We created this series of “Spend, Save, Splurge!” with ideas for different types of equipment for every budget.

SPEND: Plkler triangles are FULL of possibilities. You can climb and hang on them solo, or there is the option to buy slide and climbing attachments. They are sold out on amazon but the toddler triangle is currently on sale at or has many options for older kids.

SAVE: Have a flair for DIY? We are loving this Cardboard Obstacle Course from Head over to their account for instructions on how to build it, and see it in action!

SPLURGE: This indoor playground from ActiveWood (on Etsy) has it all, a climbing ladder, slide, swing, and climbing triangle. It can be placed outside, but we love the compact size and aesthetic that makes it a great indoor option as well.

Today’s activity is cotton ball races!

•Materials: Cotton Ball, Straw, Box or “finish” line (could be painters tape)

• Benefits: Breath work, muscle and joint input from crawling, motor planning

How to play: Race your child to see who can be the first person to get their cotton ball across the finish line! You can add obstacles in the path to make it more difficult.

Need a developmentally appropriate activity to occupy your babe while working on e-learning with your older child? Take a bucket of rolled oats and put different objects inside like shapes, small cups, spoons and toys. Let them explore, dump and dig. This works on fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, and independent sitting. 💛
