Providing hope and healing are the building blocks of our mission. It’s our patients, like Kairo, who stack up against all odds to show the world the possibilities of patient-centered care. Our lakefront views and nautical themes are a few ways we make our patients feel more comfortable. Of course, our visitors too. Thanks to Rep. Yolanda Morris, Rep. Anna Moeller, Sen. Robert Peters and staff from Rep. Bob Morgan, and IL House of Representatives Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch for coming to see our campus and learn more about what we do for our families and community.

Flashback Friday: Karen Navoy couldn’t walk in a straight line, had slurred speech, and trembling hands, when her parents brought her to La Rabida in 1963. Doctors diagnosed her with Sydenham Chorea, a neurological disorder commonly caused by strep throat or rheumatic fever. The condition affects the nervous system leading to involuntary and uncoordinated movements.

Karen spent a few months in the inpatient unit, but her experience left an impression for a lifetime.

She still enjoyed the traditional childhood moments like getting her first Barbie, and of course, as a 7th grader, she still had to dedicate time to her schoolwork with the hospital’s tutor. She remembers the view of Lake Michigan and being able to wave to her family and friends who would visit from the window of her room.

One of Karen’s favorite memories is when her best friend Sue visited and gave her a plush toy vulture, which she named LeRoy. Years later, Karen developed breast cancer. During her recovery, Karen’s husband, John, set out to find another LeRoy to help bring comfort.

Now, when Karen reflects on what it means to support La Rabida, she thinks about the exceptional care she received and her most cherished memories.

Thank you to , for capturing the installation process of the new Disney character ceiling tiles, and the moments of excitement from one of our patients, Demir and his mom, Ladhaj!

These tiles are more than just artwork on the ceiling. Our Child Life Specialist, Xavier Sudlow, details the positive difference these familiar faces can have on a patient’s journey. Watch the story here 📺🤩: https://abc7.ws/436AT5d

La Rabida's Children's Advocacy Center is staffed with trauma-informed pediatric experts who set out to bring hope and healing to children who have experienced abuse. We are grateful to The Toy Foundation for a generous grant allowing us to provide our patients with Comfort Care Kits filled with books, crafts, and sensory toys to facilitate healthy coping skills. From the shores of Lake Michigan to the heights of the Rocky Mountains in Denver, La Rabida continues to be at the forefront of clinical innovation and development in child healthcare. As part of our outpatient clinical team, Dr. Natasha Bhayani and Christina Linboom, LCSW, MSW, ACM, CMAC, proudly shared the impact we’ve made on our patients’ lives, both in and out of the exam room.

Sam Cossen, LCSW, MSW and Elaina Mohead, Community Health Worker & Family Advocate offer professional and personal expertise to help educate and empower our families to bridge the gaps between special education and healthcare. We are grateful for our partnership with the Cook County Health Stronger Together initiative.

Through our comprehensive and holistic approach, we are confident our patients receive the best medical care possible. Thank you American Academy of Pediatrics, for hosting La Rabida at the National Conference.
