The “Glow and Grow” theme for the 2026 MEANGirlsEmpowerment Girls Health Matters Summit was a perfect fit for the work we do every day to nurture and support the growth and healthy futures of young people in our community.

Case Manager Carolina and Family Peer Advocate Achsah from La Rabida Chicago Child Trauma Center (CCTC), along with Madison, a La Rabida Volunteer, attended the summit last Saturday at Englewood STEM High School to share mental health and self-care resources with hundreds of young girls and their families.

April is and a time to celebrate, support, and uplift every child’s unique strength and personality.

At La Rabida, our caring team of specially trained rehabilitation specialists like our speech, occupational, and physical therapists, works closely with our pediatricians to support children diagnosed with autism and help them reach their full potential.

Jessica, occupational therapist, and Liz, speech-language pathologist, have been working with 5-year-old Donovan for two months. With each visit, Donovan reaches new milestones. He can climb to the top of the ladder using sensory techniques he’s learned and excitedly tell Mom about it in full sentences.

“I’ve seen so much progress,” says Donovan’s mom, Shanice. “I remember the first time he said something to me; he wasn’t frustrated or pointing. He was just talking to me!”

Staying at the hospital can be overwhelming for kids. That’s where our Child Life Services Team comes in!

Child Life Specialists make some of the hardest moments a little easier for children and their families. From easing fear to creating fun moments, they bring comfort, understanding, and support when it’s needed most.

A special thanks to La Rabida’s Child Life Manager, Ericka, and Child Life Specialists Megan, Xavier, and Yasmeen, who use their creativity, care, and compassion to make the hospital experience the best it can be for our patients and their families.

Patients and families at La Rabida Children’s Hospital were surprised by a special visitor on Easter morning. Long-time hospital supporter Allen Kutchins, dressed as the Easter Bunny, delivered baskets to children who spent the holiday in the hospital, bringing smiles and creating cherished family memories.

Thank you to our Corporate Advisory Board for donating the baskets and to our volunteers and community partners, , who packaged the special gifts!

Detective Sandra Baptist-Spruiell with the Harvey Police Department, who has supported La Rabida Children’s Advocacy Center for nearly 20 years, won the Joan Pernecke Champions of Children Award.

Helping and protecting children takes an all-hands-on-deck approach. We are grateful for the partnership of Detective Baptist-Spruiell, who works with our multidisciplinary team to respond to every call and case with professionalism and collaboration.

The CAC team attended the Children's Advocacy Center of Illinois (CACI) Champions of Children Conference to celebrate this amazing recognition.

La Rabida Children’s Advocacy Center provides forensic interviews and coordinates services with support from local law enforcement agencies in 30 municipalities in Chicago’s south suburbs for children who are victims of child abuse and violent crimes.

During , we honor the remarkable efforts of La Rabida’s Women’s Board, our hospital’s original founders.

In 1896, La Rabida Women’s Board, 17 dedicated volunteers, worked to create a fresh-air children's sanitarium by converting a building left over from the Columbian World Exposition on Lake Michigan’s south shore.

Originally focused on caring for children from low-income backgrounds, the board expanded its efforts by opening an infant welfare station and a day nursery, raising funds for operations and recruiting volunteer physicians for the “La Rabida Jackson Park Sanitarium.” In fact, the sanitarium’s first resident physician was a woman: Dr. Emma M. Moore.

Today, 130 years later, La Rabida Children's Hospital stands on the shoulders of these visionary women and continues their legacy of providing support and care for every child, regardless of their ability to pay.

We are stronger together in raising the possibilities for a lifetime!

Thank you to the Chicago Health Executives Forum (CHEF) for recognizing our Stronger Together team, who won the Innovation Award for our advocacy program educating and empowering patients and families navigating the school system.

La Rabida primary care physician Dr. Natasha Bhayani, along with Elania, family advocate and community health worker, and Sam, a social worker, have helped more than 500 patients and shared meaningful conversations with more than 1,000 parents and caregivers since the program started in September 2024.

We appreciate Cook County Health for the grant that supports our mission and our patients’ education!

Following an injury, 10-year-old Cooper came to La Rabida unable to move the left side of his body. After three weeks of rehabilitative treatment, he is now regaining his mobility. He smiles with a determined face every time his physical therapist, Sydney, sets out new exercises to build on his progress.

Cooper’s story exemplifies the power of our purpose. La Rabida has been a place of hope and healing for 130 years. Our best-in-class care has gained attention throughout Chicagoland and beyond.

In fact, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren recently stopped by La Rabida with Illinois State Senator Robert Peters to learn more about the hospital's work. They even surprised Cooper and his mom, Tyler, with a short visit.

Tyler credits Dr. Nicholas Woolf and the entire La Rabida care team for giving Cooper the guidance and support he needed to step into the next phase of recovery: walking on his own.
