Now, when we talk trailblazers of the ILBC, we would be remiss if we did not talk about the legend that was the Honorable Harold Washington.

Veteran, Former State Representative, Senator, US Congressman and 1st African American Mayor; he served the country bravely and with his elected service on several levels of government: City, State, and Federally he showed us what commitment really looked like.

He was a man for the people, bringing together coalitions all while making sure he supported the community of his origin.

Founding Member of the ILBC in 1967, when the time was right he certainly made you Come Alive and Punch 9!

Black History is not just about celebration — it’s about truth.

In 1968, the West Side of Chicago burned after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. What happened here wasn’t just fire… it was pain, frustration, and a community demanding to be heard.

But from those ashes, resilience was born.

The West Side is more than headlines.
It is culture.
It is legacy.
It is strength.
It is people who rebuild.

This Black History Month, we remember — not just what burned, but what survived.
