Phi Delta Chi Professional Pharmacy Fraternity is excited to announce that we will be increasing campus awareness through our Donate Life/Be The Match Initiative. Where: UIC COP Lobby and B8 (donation room)
Our goal is to inform others on the ins and outs of donation, as well as to dispel some of the myths that discourage people from registering. For example, did you know that you can save 8, or
improve up to 50 lives by being an organ donor? Or did you know that most marrow donations don't even require surgery (it's actually similar to donating blood)? Blood donation is highly advertised while the importance of organ and bone marrow donation goes relatively unpublicized and unnoticed. We want to be able to reverse this trend, especially among health care professionals, as we should be able to discuss any of these topics with the general population. As of October 2011, over 110,000 people are on the waiting list for an organ transplant in the US. Donate Life America is a nonprofit alliance of national organizations dedicated to educating the public about organ, eye, and tissue donation in order to save the lives of those in desperate need of an organ transplant. More information can be found at: http://www.donatelifeillinois.org/
Be The Match provides marrow transplants to patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other diseases. The nonprofit organization matches patients with donors, educates health care professionals, and conducts research so more lives can be saved. As of January 2010, the Be the Match had facilitated more than 43,000 transplants worldwide. More information can be found at: http://www.marrow.org/Home.aspx
Please feel free to stop by the booth during the blood drive for more information. Also, as an added bonus, the first 15 people that register to be an organ donor will receive a free Donate Life T-shirt! Register and get yours before they're gone!
