Black History Month is an excellent time to make sure legacies live on by reading incredible stories of the women and men who pioneered excellence by activating change and inspiring others to be their best.

There are incredible legacies found in Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History and Little Legends: Exceptional Men in Black History by Vashti Harrison. Today is National Women Physicians Day, and while you usually see our doctors in the clinic caring for your kiddos, we wanted to share a few pictures of some of the many amazing women physicians when they aren't wearing their stethoscopes. From weekend gatherings to celebrating life's milestones together, these women aren't just colleagues—they’re a team dedicated to clinical excellence and spending time together, both in and out of the office.

We are thrilled to share the beginning plans to develop a low-acuity pediatric hospital in the Downers Grove area — an important step in expanding access to world-class pediatric care for families in Chicago’s western suburbs!

For the Socha family, who live in the western suburbs of Chicago, having access to expert pediatric care closer to home means everything. Treated for a rare genetic disease since birth, Gabe and Gwen have traveled more than 100 miles every other week to Lurie Children’s for life-saving infusions. It means early mornings, long hours in traffic and disruption to their day-to-day routines. Their mom, Bonnie, says, “It’s exhausting. But as a parent, you do anything for your kids. And we do it because we know that when we walk into Lurie Children’s, our kids are in the hands of people who truly care about them.”

Without access to this level of specialized care, Gwen and Gabe “simply wouldn’t be here living the full, amazing lives they deserve. Having a Lurie Children’s closer to home means fewer long days on the road, less strain on our kids’ bodies, and more time being a family instead of traveling for care,” says Bonnie.
