Five Keys Yoga Yoga for the Whole Family: Traditional Yoga Classes, Yoga for All Abilities, and Yoga Therapy

Our traditional hatha yoga classes feature fun sequences to challenge the body, but ultimately our work is to teach our students how to develop greater control over their own minds. We strive to provide compassionate, evidence-based yoga classes and Yoga Therapy services, which nurture our yoga students and Yoga Therapy clients. Our studio welcomes students with a variety of needs, as we believe yoga is a practice from which anyone can benefit, adaptable to any limitation.

Join Aki on Sunday May 31st at 1pm for a Props Workshop!

There's a million ways to use props in our yoga practice and most classes only skim the surface.

This workshop will give us ample time to explore the many ways we can use props to deepen postures while maintaining proper alignment within our bodies. Participants will leave with a sense of space and strength within their bodies and a new understanding of how they can incorporate props into their daily practice.

Open to all levels of yogis from beginner to advanced. The beauty of props is that they allow us to tailor our practice to ourselves!

Does your downward facing dog feel tense? Uncomfortable? Does it seem more difficult than it needs to be?

This pose does not need to be painful. It may seem like a simple or "easy" pose, but, there are actually many muscles working and many physical components of this foundational posture.

In this ten minute video, Rachel shows you how your downward facing dog, Adho Mukha Svanasana, can feel better and more easeful.

Have you learned about the first Limb of Yoga? The first limb is Yama, and furthermore we can explore the Yamas and Niyamas. These are some of the key foundations of Raja Yoga. Read more on our blog or enjoy a snippet from the blog post below.

One of the participants in the teacher training mentioned that this Sutra comes within the group of Sutras discussing the Yamas and Niyamas (the “dos and don’ts” of Raja Yoga). She drew a relationship between pratipaksa bhavana and the first two limbs of Raja Yoga that I had never noticed before.

She suggested that when we fall short of our goals - to live righteously and love unconditionally - it is not helpful to dwell in bad feelings about our misapplication of these principles into our life. Sutra 2.33 is placed within the discussion of the Yamas and Niyamas to remind us of a tool we can cultivate when faced with disappointment in our own behavior.

Say I have violent thoughts or said violent words (lack of ahimsa), lie to someone (lack of satya), take credit for something that isn’t mine (lack of asteya), overeat (lack of brahmacarya), or hang onto a situation that isn’t good for me (lack of aparigraha). In other words, if I fail to practice the Yamas.

Or maybe I have trouble keeping my space clean (lack of saucha), feel discontent about life’s circumstances (lack of santosha), lash out when hurt (lack of tapah), don’t make time for self-improvement (lack of svadhyaya), or can’t let go of control (lack of Ishvara pranidhana). And I fail to practice the Niyamas.

Instead of thinking "wow, I’m a really violent, lying, thieving, gluttonous, greedy person. I can’t believe I’m so impure, malcontent, reactive, lazy, and controlling," we should think opposite, positive thoughts instead.

Even though the temps are warming outside, warm teas can be wonderful for your digestion all year round!

Ancient Ayurvedic practices emphasize fennel and coriander teas to soothe tummy troubles. Peppermint and ginger can do wonders as well, and those are amongst the variety of teas we have in our studio for you to enjoy!

And as we get further into summer, iced teas will do the trick too!

✨ MIKE ✨

Meet our student of the month! Mike joined our community three years ago and has now attended 150 classes! Read a bit about Mike's Yoga journey below and then visit our blog to read more.

What benefits did you notice once you started practicing consistently?

More flexibility, my body is able to be more flexible, and it taught me how to breathe and meditate and stay in the moment. It also helped me with digestive problems that I started having during the pandemic.

What would you tell yourself before you started practicing yoga?

That I need to get out and do something for myself. Life is not always comfort because if you stay comfortable it doesn't help you in the long run and after a while you start to digress.
