Illinois LEND Interdisciplinary graduate-level training on leadership in disability advocacy, research, community We also provide training to family and self-advocates.

We are an interdisciplinary graduate-level training program located within the Institute on Disability and Human Development on the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. Our training focuses on leadership development in the areas of advocacy, research, community engagement, and clinical skills for graduate students who plan to work with people with disabilities. LEND trainees are graduate students, working professionals, family members, and self-advocates. IL LEND is proud to have trainees from 14 different disciplines including: Applied Behavior Analysis, Disability Studies, Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics, Family, Nursing, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychology, Public Health, Self-Advocacy, Social Work, Special Education, and Speech Language Pathology. The LEND program accepts students from UIC, University of Chicago, Southern Illinois University, as well as other schools in the area including: The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Adler School of Professional Psychology, Argosy University, Loyola University, and Governor’s State University.

Three of our LEND trainees, Angie Murthy, Abby Caughman, and Madison Turner have been working with Claire McNorton at Planned Parenthood of Illinois to host a Disability and S*x Ed Story telling workshop! Disabled individuals will have the opportunity to develop their own sex-ed stories to be used as a tool for advocacy! The workhop will take place on Zoom this Wednesday, March 27, at 1pm. Clear sidewalks, crosswalks, and curbs are incredibly important to everyone, including disabled individuals. Whose responsibility should it be to clear them? Private citizens or the city of Chicago?

While at the AUCD conference, our RA and current DHD PhD student, Hope Sparks, had the opportunity to present her research on supporting families across aging and developmental disability networks! Hope presented alongside another DHD faculty, Dr. Sumithra Murthy. They are both engaged in meaningful work researching how to improve the lives of disabled individuals and their families.
