June Movement of the Month: Curtsy Step-Up

The curtsy step-up is an excellent lower-body movement that targets the glutes — especially the gluteus medius and gluteus maximus — while also strengthening the quads, hamstrings, and stabilizing muscles around the hips and knees. The unique step-and-cross motion places more emphasis on the outer glutes and deep hip stabilizers, making it a powerful tool for building strength and symmetry in the lower body. This exercise also enhances single-leg stability and control, both essential for injury prevention and improving everyday movement patterns.

Follow along for instructions on how to perform the curtsy step-up:
1. Stand facing a box or step that's knee height, holding dumbbells at your sides (optional for added load).
2. Step one foot onto the box across your body.
3. Keep the weight onto the front leg as you push through your heel to engage the front glute as you rise onto the box.
4. Squeeze your glutes at the top.
5. Hinge your waist forward, reach your foot backward and across your body as you slowly lower down with control.
6. Complete all reps on one side before switching.

Regression: Curtsy Lunge (Bodyweight or Light Load)
Build glute coordination and strength by practicing the curtsy lunge on the ground before progressing to elevated step-ups.

Progression: Deficit Curtsy Step-Up with Slow Eccentric
Use a higher box and slow down the lowering phase (3–5 seconds) to increase glute activation and time under tension.
