Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin has long demonstrated a deep commitment to honoring the gift of sight, not only through responsible tissue stewardship, but through thoughtful engagement with donor families.

Vision Share is honored to partner with Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin in a new initiative focused on collecting and sharing stories from international recipients whose vision has been restored through donor tissue placed abroad, as well as donor stories shared by their loved ones.

For donor families, seeing the global reach of their loved one’s gift can be profoundly meaningful. This collaborative project also seeks to deepen public understanding of how the Gift of Sight reshapes lives as an extraordinary act of generosity and public good.

Together, our partnership reflects a shared commitment not only to expanding placement opportunities worldwide, but also to honoring each donor’s legacy with care and transparency.

We believe stewardship extends beyond placement. It includes ensuring that the impact of donation is understood across borders and communities.

We are grateful for Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin’s collaboration in this important work and look forward to sharing more stories of restored sight in the months ahead.

This month, we’re putting the spotlight on Eversight for their recent contribution to a landmark NIH-funded corneal transplantation study published in JAMA Ophthalmology.

The study demonstrated that corneas from donors with diabetes achieve transplant outcomes comparable to non-diabetic donors, a finding that could expand the available donor pool and increase access to sight-restoring surgery worldwide.

Eversight’s involvement reflects the vital role eye banks play not only in tissue recovery and distribution, but in advancing the research that informs future standards of care. We’re proud to recognize Eversight as a Vision Share member helping move the field forward through evidence-based innovation.

We are honored to spotlight Donna Drury, Executive Director of one of our member eye banks, the UT Southwestern Transplant Services Center (TSC), and recipient of the 2020 EBAA Leonard Heise Award.
Donna’s leadership has strengthened UT Southwestern TSC’s commitment to excellence in tissue recovery, surgeon support, and innovation that expands access to sight-restoring care. Her unwavering focus on quality and collaboration has improved countless patient outcomes and elevated best practices across the industry.

After 33 years of service, including 15 years as Director, Donna will retire at the end of this year. We are also pleased to congratulate Sharlene Rupp, who will step into the Executive Director role. Sharlene brings more than 18 years of experience in eye and tissue banking at Donor Network of Arizona, along with a decade of dedicated leadership in eye bank operations. She is deeply committed to advancing innovation that restores sight, promotes healing, and honors the legacy of donors and their families.

We applaud the significant contributions Donna has made throughout her career and the strong foundation she has built for the Transplant Services Center. As UT Southwestern enters this next chapter, we look forward to continuing to support the center’s ongoing impact in sight restoration.

Last week, our Executive Director, Phil Fasone, visited their team to celebrate 20+ years of collaboration supporting Magrabi’s corneal transplant program and the life-changing care it brings to communities across Saudi Arabia. Special thanks to Hospital Director, Mr. Mohammed Abdullah for a thoughtful visit that included meetings with key staff, a facility tour, dinner, and a glimpse of the beautiful city of Riyadh.

Congratulations to Chris Hanna, Executive Director of Utah Eye Bank, on receiving the EBAA Heise Award. This honor highlights his leadership and lasting impact on the field of eye banking. We’re grateful for the expertise and collaboration Chris brings to our Vision Share network.

During last week's Cornea and Eye Banking Forum, we announced Chris Hanna as the 2026 Leonard Heise Award honoree.

The Heise Award is eye banking's highest honor, presented to non-medical eye bankers in recognition of their outstanding devotion to EBAA's development and for exemplifying the precepts of Leonard Heise, a major contributor to the fight against blindness and one of EBAA's founders.

Chris will be recognized during the 2026 EBAA Annual Meeting in Indianapolis in June.

Join us in congratulating him on his well-deserved achievement!
