Safety is serious! Let’s talk about it! Trauma season is upon us in the HEMS world.
EMS…thinking about calling us out? What do you need to consider when landing an aircraft?
1. Location (free of obstacles and obstructions)
2. Size of LZ (100ft x 100ft)
3. Gradient (flat surface, no slopes)
4. Surface (pavement preferred however we can land in fields, roadways, baseball fields, golf courses, football fields, etc)
Scene safety also includes…
📍Ensuring bystanders are kept away from the landing zone
📍The landing zone area is free of debris or anything that can be blown around by rotor wash
📍Never approach the aircraft without crew es**rt
📍Always approach the aircraft at the 10 & 2 positions (Nose of the aircraft being 12 o’clock)
📍Never approach the tail rotor (This is the most dangerous area to be when an aircraft is in hot operations)
📍In roadways without a barrier in between traffic lanes, shut down both lanes of traffic
