Our featured SLP, Mindy, shared a simple and effective way to support your child’s language development right at home.

She recommends weaving language into your daily routines by singing familiar songs like “Old McDonald” or “Twinkle, Twinkle” during moments like mealtime or bath time. Try pausing throughout the song to give your child a chance to jump in and fill in a word or sound.

These little pauses create opportunities for turn-taking and encourage your child to actively participate, helping build their confidence and communication skills in a fun, natural way.

Looking for a simple and fun way to support your child’s language development? Featured therapist Mindy suggests attending local library storytimes!

She said, "Chicago Public Libraries offer storytimes that are free to attend! This is a great opportunity to support your child’s language development. These sessions introduce your child to a structured activity while also giving them opportunities to socialize with other children. They are exposed to many language models through the stories, songs, and interacting with the group. This can help support their vocabulary, comprehension, and early communication skills."

Our May “Kids Making Headlines” spotlight is all about Sofia!

Sofia has been making wonderful progress with her vocabulary, imitation, and participation with friends in the classroom. She has recently started imitating two-word phrases while playing with some of her favorite toys like animals and Play-Doh, which is such an exciting milestone.

We love seeing her confidence and communication skills grow. Keep up the amazing work, Sofia!

Our April featured therapist, Kerry, suggests turning everyday items into a simple obstacle course that gives your child a safe outlet for movement.

She said, "You can turn everyday household items like painter’s tape, pillows, or blankets into a fun obstacle course that gives your child a safe outlet for movement. Obstacle courses also build impulse control and executive functioning, especially when you add red‑light/green‑light instructions or let your child design the course themselves."

Looking for a simple, engaging activity with big developmental benefits? Featured OT, Kerry, recommends using bubbles during playtime.

Bubbles are a simple but powerful tool for development—they support visual‑motor skills as kids pop them on the wand, track them through the air, or balance to stomp them with their feet.” Kerry shares.

She also highlights how bubbles can support regulation. “They're also wonderful for calming and regulation, offering opportunities for deep breathing, watching them fall for a calming effect, or stomping them when they reach the floor to release frustration.”

It is an easy activity that supports both skill building and emotional regulation while keeping play light and fun.
