🌀 “Legacy burdens often aren’t ours to carry, yet we’ve carried them our whole lives.”
— Stacey Hurst, LCPC

If you feel weighed down by pain that feels bigger than your own story, you’re not alone. Healing begins when we recognize what truly belongs to us—and what doesn’t.

🗣️ Message from Ara Lucia Ashburne, LCPC:

You’re not lazy. You’re not dramatic. You’re out of spoons.

For those living with depression, anxiety, or trauma, everyday tasks—like having a conversation, making a phone call, or going to the grocery store—aren’t just errands. They’re decisions about how to spend your limited energy.

đź’› Your exhaustion is valid. Your boundaries matter.
You’re doing the best you can, and that’s enough.

.🥄 How many spoons do you have today?

Sometimes, just getting through the day takes all your energy. Here’s what 5 spoons might look like:

âś… Getting out of bed
âś… Attending therapy or journaling
âś… Processing a trauma memory
âś… Managing anxiety or a trauma trigger
âś… Social interaction (even with people you love)

Each task costs energy — emotional, mental, and physical. And that’s okay. Your spoons are real, and so is your effort.

đź’› Be kind to yourself. Some days, rest is progress.

🥄 What Is Spoon Theory?
Ever felt like the simplest task took everything out of you? Spoon Theory explains why.

💡 Therapist Ara Lucia Ashburne, LCPC, breaks it down in her latest blog—showing how spoons can help us understand daily energy, chronic stress, and invisible exhaustion:

If you’ve ever said “I just can’t today” and didn’t know why—this blog is for you.

💥 That’s not overreacting. That’s remembering.
When your reaction feels too big for the moment, it’s not because you’re too sensitive.
It’s your nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do: protect you.

✨ The good news?
Therapy can help you untangle the past from the present.
You can hold pain with more clarity—and less overwhelm.
You can respond, rather than relive.
You are not broken.

đź’¬ In her latest blog, Ara Lucia Ashburne, LCPC, explores this healing process and what it means to carry pain that spans beyond today.

🎯 What is the Pinball Effect?

In the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, founder Dick Schwartz uses the term The Pinball Effect to describe what happens when present-day pain sets off a cascade of past wounds—like a pinball bouncing off old emotional “bumpers.”

A breakup, a sharp comment, or a moment of rejection doesn’t just hurt in isolation.
It activates every bruise we’ve carried.

🧠 But in therapy, we can slow the game down.
We can visit those old bumpers with compassion—understand them, unburden them, and begin to heal.

So the next time pain shows up, it doesn’t flood you.
It just gets to be what it is: present, real, and manageable.

If your emotions ever feel bigger than the moment—you’re not broken. You’re remembering.
In her blog, "When Pain Feels Bigger Than It Is: The Pinball Effect," Ara explores how current pain can stir up old wounds, and why that response is deeply human.

✨ It’s not too much. It’s just layered.

đź’Ą Why does this hurt so much?
Because it’s not just this moment.

When we experience something painful—like rejection, a loss, or a harsh comment—our brain doesn’t react in isolation. It replays every past hurt that feels even remotely similar.

In her newest blog, Ara explains why your emotional responses aren’t “too much”—they’re just deep. And they make sense.

💛 If you’ve ever wondered “Why do I feel this so strongly?”—this one’s for you.
