Last week, Firesafe™ firebreak manufacturer BPR Medical released data from its report “Firebreaks: a risk-based approach to safer home oxygen delivery.” The report confirms that home oxygen fires in the US remain a critical public health issue, with 1 oxygen fire-related death every 4 days from 2017-2021. BPR also referenced a recent study that states hospital admissions for oxygen-related burns decreased by 63% following the distribution of firebreak kits.

Firebreaks are small thermal fuses that activate when detecting heat in the home oxygen delivery circuit, extinguishing a fire tracking back along the oxygen delivery tubing. In England, where firebreaks have been mandatory since 2006, there are nearly 20 times fewer oxygen fire fatalities than in the US.
