The winter months are commonly called “cold and flu season”, but there are many factors that go into WHY we often catch viruses during this time.

Stress is the foundation of dis-ease and it can manifest in the body in MANY different ways leading to a variety of physical and emotional symptoms.

When overloaded with stress, our bodies trigger the “fight or flight” mechanism, a survival response that heightens heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration to tackle immediate dangers. However, when stress is constantly present, it leads to an overactive fight or flight response, manifesting many physical responses in the body.

Stress in the body can look like:
- problems with sleeping
- increased anxiety
- migraines and headaches
- trouble with digestion
- weak immune system
- irregular menstrual cycles

Trouble with homework time? Here are 4 brain based tips to help promote a successful homework environment 🧠✏️

1. Get wiggles out first
Don’t try to attempt homework immediately after school. Get some fresh air outside or silly indoor play with lots of pushing/pulling/jumping (these are naturally calming movements to the nervous system)

2. Use a visual timer
Set a reasonable amount of time to complete homework and set it on your visual timer. This will provide visual feedback for your child in the expectation. Remember: Your child’s attention span is their age +1

3. Provide a snack
A hungry belly is going to have a hard time focusing. Plus, crunchy and/or chewy snacks can be very calming to the nervous system! Use this opportunity to make it fun, provide a casual environment (that is also secretly getting their brain ready)

4. Set the environment + breaks
Set the environment to your child’s needs. Sit on the ground vs at the table. Play music vs. no music. And most importantly, allow for brain breaks if you notice your child getting easily frustrated or tearful. A brain under stress is not conducive to learning!
