Honoring Black History in Social Work & Aging
As Black History Month comes to a close, we recognize the contributions of Black leaders who have shaped the field of social work and elder care. In Chicago, Ida B. Wells and Dr. Timuel Black dedicated their lives to justice, advocacy, and community empowerment—work that continues to inspire us today.
Ida B. Wells, a fearless journalist and activist, fought for racial justice and co-founded organizations that improved housing and social services for African Americans, including older adults.
Dr. Timuel Black, a historian and civil rights leader, spent decades documenting Black history and advocating for policies that uplifted communities, ensuring that aging African Americans were seen, heard, and valued.
Their legacies remind us that dignity, equity, and care must be at the heart of our work. As we move forward, we carry their lessons with us, striving to support and empower older adults in our communities.
