as we continue with the theme of the Winter, elderhood & crone wisdom in our Moon Spirals Membership i want to take some time exploring the myths of the deities or archetypes from ancient times that embody these concepts...

🐚and i’d like to take a look at this terms and decolonize them by following the spiral back to the roots🐚

I will begin this week with the concept of the “Hag” in our Moon Spirals group then moving on to analyzing & decolonizing the myths & stories of powerful archetypes like Baba Yaga, Coatlicue, Miktlanzihuatl & more…

Let us begin with HAG

The Hag is a word that usually is used to connote an old, ugly, evil woman. If you look it up in websters dictionary it literally says:

1: an ugly, slatternly, or evil-looking old woman
2: a: a female demon b: an evil or frightening spirit : HOBGOBLIN
3: WITCH haggish ˈha-gish adjective

but if you dive deeper into the etymology you find some fascinating links:

The ego death journey is asking us to step up into the version of ourselves needed by our global community… and so through this mini course process we are all diving into the “homework” from our last session so that we can continue integrating practicing and be ready for the final ceremony on the Dark Moon on Thurs Feb 8th

What kind of elder do you want to be? And what daily moves towards that are you taking?

These are the questions we are sitting with in the Moon Spirals Membership this season…

This year’s curriculum has been taking us on a ride of remembering, reclaiming, healing and embodying:

Our Body as Temple
Our Voice as Sacred Chant
Our Womb as Inner Sanctum
Our Self as the Altar
And Every Day of our life as Ceremony...

We have been doing this by understanding the themes around each of our trecenas or 13 year cycles and spending time with the archetypes of the Lunar Archetypal Journey, integrating both anthropocentric archetypes with decolonial nature-centered archetypes... and working with herbs, ofrendas, embodiment exercises & remedios…

This month brought us into the final chapter of this journey in which we honor the Dark Moon, Winter, Crone, Oracle & Elder phases of our cycles

This whole year has been a trip… as we decolonize our perspective of archetypes, of the way we work with our “ego”, how to embody our sacred gifts & live life intentionally and with the full embodiment of the fact that we are sacred, we are the altar and every day is a ceremony

But this season is where we are going deeper into the ofrendas, the invocations, and moving in ceremony…

What kind of elder do you want to be?
How do you want to honor this vision this winter?

Last night I was preparing for the Queen of the Underworld integration ceremony tonight, and so my daughter had been hearing me talking about ego death and practicing the meditation I will be doing tonight, so she asked me what “egodeath” means.

I explained it to her in simple terms, and she said “i want an ego death” and i told her “thats good, because you will have one! probably when you’re 9 then again when you’re 13 and then again and again and again. we have many throughout our lives and each time we get to choose who we’re going to become” and she goes

“i want one right now!”

so i told her “ok, then if you think you are ready for an ego death you have to let this Yanki go. are you ready for that?”

and she said “yes”

so i held a simple and playful ceremony with her where she identified different things she is ready to stop doing her (shes 5 so this included to stop using a baby voice and “embracing the power of yet so not getting frustrated when she doesn’t get soemthing right away🙃) and we ceremoniously said goodbye to each one, one by one

Then i led her through an acting out (ahem ceremony) of stepping out of her old self

she said “yay”

and returned to playing...

Then she turned around and said “mommy now your turn” and guided me through choosing what I was going to be letting go and letting die. She did everything I had done to her, to me.

I was crying a bit as I watched her guide her first ceremony on Makuilli Koatl

🖤😭🖤😍🖤

may it always be this simple and easy to let go and let new life in

may we all embrace ego death this lightly remembering the death is in the struggle and the power lies in the sweet surrender

may all future generations embrace the awareness of their different levels of consciousness and how they interact with their surroundings in this way

may she not have to struggle blindly through the ego death process as I and so many of us have!

and may tonights ceremony be just as sweet and powerful as last nights

What even is our ego?
There are many different approaches but what has resonated for me the most from both depth psychology and the ancestral Toltekatl knowledge (and how I approach my ego death journey) are that the ego is:

🖤the accumulation of memories, thoughts, feelings, actions & reactions to create a sense of self or identity in this lifetime

🖤one’s sense of self, self worth, especially in contrast to another Self, society, experiences or the World

🖤the part of our psyche that creates an identity & subsequent narrative of that identity’s engagement with its surroundings

In the Toltekayotl the concept that aligns with “the ego” is:
🖤the part of our psyche that our conscious self is aware of, that our Tlatlauhki Tezkatlipoka has filtered and allowed to come into play into our Iztak Tezkatlipoka
🖤the masks of personas we wear either unconsciously or intentionally in different scenarios, ceremonies and circumstances

Or you can even look at it as:
🖤our personal “algorithm” as a result of conditioning & programming by our lived experiences, caretakers, culture & Self

There are many types of masks that we wear at different times due to different causes. In some traditions we are actually trained to learn how to wear specific masks for specific ceremonies or astronomical alignments.

Meanwhile in our society, this awareness of how we are choosing to engage with the world has historically been chalked up to “personality”

However often we feel this voice within telling us, this isn’t working anymore… and something needs to give

While we receive messages from nature and our subconscious all the time, if we ignore them, they usually bubble up to the surface during our Luteal phase if we are menstruating beings and why PMS is actually a powerful gift

But if left intended to, or when faced with extenuating circumstance forcing us into a huge leap of evolution, we are often confronted with a more painful process: the ego death or transformation or transmutation

-the people they’re excited to no longer be
-the people they’re too exhausted to be
-the people they don’t need to be anymore
-the people they don’t want to be anymore
~the people they outgrew
-the people they never actually were all along

We so badly want the people we love to get their spark back when it burns out;

to become speedily found when they are lost.

And we do often want to rush through our own dark nights of the soul, we want to get our groove back instead of embracing the darkness as the teacher and friend it is

But it’s not our job to put them or ourselves back together when they/we have broken

It is our job to witness the breaking, the death and release

It is our job to witness the grief and in betweenness. To sit with them and with us. In silence. Stillness. Allowing the grief to break our hearts open and make more space for the new life coming through

It’s our job to witness the creation of a completely different version with curiosity & empathy

It is our job to travel with them or our self between each version and to honor what emerges and is shed along the way

Sometimes it will be an even more radiant light that emerges.

Sometimes it will be a flicker that disappears and temporarily floods the room with a perfect and necessary darkness.

It’s time we release the people we’ve been and allow those around to do so as well

Over at we’ve been saying this for the last 13 years…

And we respect everyone’s chosen path…

But you know, I’m just sayin…
If you look up the history of the Julian-then-Gregorian calendar it reads like a Trumpian soap opera… lots of little men with big egos fighting over who’s month would have more days…

There’s nothing left in this calendar related to the actual natural & scientific cycles of the earth. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But i do recognize it is important to learn what year we will have to do taxes for 🙈

I will be forever grateful to Maestro Meza & & for decolonizing my perspective of time…

Every Moon Cycle we go through an Archetypal Bioenergetic Journey that allows us to grow, learn, face challenges, reflect, face fears, release,
develop relationships with others and our inner self and finally confront an ego death.

Every cycle we are being prepared and preparing ourselves all moon cycle for the initiatory experience of bleeding and offering that blood back to the soure of creation.

Menstruation is a beautiful & powerful ceremony offered to us by nature to facilitate a crucial part of personal & spiritual development: Initiation through rest, reflection, release & death

This is also one of the most misunderstood aspects of our menstrual cycle due to the demands of patriarchy & colonization

Our instincts tell us to retreat, rest, reflect, release & rewild, but our current society does not facilitate this monthly sacred initiatory process. It is our job, at this moment and place, to reclaim our rituals & ceremonies in whatever way we can ...

Initations are never meant to be easy, and often our Menstrual Phase lives up to this expectation. However with conscious awareness of the process we are going through we can make informed decisions and create a more harmonious and intentional experience for ourselves.

The initiation we go through also has multiple phases that mirror the archetypal phases of any initiation...

We are sitting just past our solar midnight. The annual “witching hour” when we embrace what the Toltekatl would call the “hatcha nocturna” or nocturnal discipline of confronting our shadows…

As we simmer in the darkest part of the year, many of us find ourselves going through our own Dark Night of the Soul, confronting our Ego Deaths & having no choice but to embrace our journeys through the underworld.

It can be a harrowing experience when we do it alone.

The first time I had an existential crisis I was completely unguided, grappling with my sense of sanity and wondering how I could survive if I don’t know who I am? Later as I learned the Toltekatl knowledge, while it didn’t make it easier to release parts of my conscious identity, come to terms with changing life paths or experience rage & grief, it did help me understand the cyclicality of this journey and that fear was a healthy response rather than an indicator of madness… I know how easy it is to feel like you’re losing all sense of grounding and even sanity when your life is chaos. And even more when we are conscious witnesses & recipients of the ugly truths of oppression, inequity, capitalism genocide and wars. Especially right now when our society is requiring us to step up…

But when that road of complete transformation opens up in front of you, it is often way too late to avoid it. Usually by the time you think you have to go through an ego death you are already in the middle of the journey. There is no climbing back out of the mouth of the serpent dragon… the only road is through…

While no one can walk the path for you, we can offer a roadmap of sorts…

Luckily we have the wisdom of the Toltekayotl to guide us through the Miktlan or land of death, for if there is any culture that embraced and learned from death it was the Toltekatl

I am on new land. Getting to know a new ecosystem. And making myself known to the land through offerings, songs and whispers of love little by little.

I’ve been asked when I will reopen the apothecary… and honestly I cannot bring myself to quite yet… I am closer than I was last season… but I am still waiting to hear back from Mother Earth with her permission…

I do not feel I can make medicina in this new space from a place of integrity quite yet as I am still new here. How can I take if I haven’t offered sufficiently yet? How can I claim to build states of harmony if I move in dissonance? How can I build right relationships with my clients & customers if I am not fully in right relationship with the land yet?

But its also more than that. I learned that when you take from a plantita’s body, you must first make offerings, speak your intentions, then you must wait for the clear “yes.”

I am being guided by a plant teacher, Ocotillo who feels very much like the guardian & guide of the doors to the land here for me. She has been a powerful teacher & healer already for me, yet I know there is still much to learn.

I feel like I must approach her with head bowed, knees to the ground, reverential of the wild and dangerous nature she holds in tandem with the awe-inspiring power of healing and moving us at our core. I am not yet ready to share about her as I am still receiving, but her myth-laden pulse & echoes of the times when humans walked side by side with the animal & plant kingdoms has filled my days with magic and my nights with dreams of defeating my inner enemies…

In short, I am waiting for this High Priestess Ocotillo’s permission before I begin to offer medicina again. And in the meantime I am enjoying feeling like a baby herbalist all over again.

I am at a beautiful point where the desert meets the mountains and so am getting to know the medicine held in the sweet succulents, radiant desert blooms & regal plantitas all over this gorgeous desertscape while finding old friends & mentors like Mullein & Ortiga & Evening Primrose on the high altitudes of the guardian Tepetls

So thank you for your patience as I move in integrity & cyclicity

It has been 31 days of the horrifying, cruel madness of genocide in Palestine. This is not the first time this has happened but the first time the globe is bearing witness to the complete psychopathic tendencies of these global powers at work.

In the midst of this I have had to confront death close to home and am just so grateful to have my loved ones near me

Simultaneously bearing witness to the unbearable pain in the genocides across the world while trying to create pockets of peace for my students many of whom are grieving the the loss of their loved ones in Palestine.

When we don’t turn away from the pain of the world but instead use it as fire to forge you in continuing to do the work needed, you realize that the heart is a muscle, grief is an altered state of consciousness, rage is a sacred fuel & we truly can expand and hold more nuance than we ever thought

We must keep calling our politicians, keep spreading the voices and last words of those speaking up from Palestine to Sudan to Congo. Keep organizing waves of resistance and pockets of peace. Keep tending to self and releasing with the water, fire, air & earth so that we can resist spiritual bypassing & keep on being who we know is needed during this time and space we have been born to…

We all have our part. Play it in a way that your ancestors will be proud. Our ancestors are watching. And our future ancestors will ask where you were…
