University of Chicago Medicine Pharmacy Residency

University of Chicago Medicine Pharmacy Residency Our training program is designed to develop knowledge and encourage clinical leadership.

The University of Chicago Medicine Pharmacy Residency Programs develop residents into autonomous clinicians with the skills needed to lead patient-specific programs in a variety of practice settings. The University of Chicago Medicine is a progressive organization, offering pharmacy residents the opportunity to work in an academic environment that fosters innovation and advancement in health care.

Residents will improve their skills and build confidence, making an undeniable difference in the residents’ ability to provide excellent patient care throughout their professional career. Rotations are available in a wide variety of practice areas under the support and guidance of preceptors who excel in their respective fields. Residents also participate in a teaching certification program and gain experience in the fundamentals of research through completion of a project. The goals of our training program are to provide opportunities for learning through projects and presentations, foster the ability to share knowledge through preceptorship, and achieve an understanding of hospital pharmacy practice through staffing responsibilities and administrative experiences. We currently offer a PGY1 program as well as PGY2 programs in cardiology, critical care, emergency medicine, internal medicine, oncology, pediatrics, pharmacogenomics, pharmacy informatics, solid organ transplant, and specialty pharmacy administration; in addition to a 2 year PGY1/PGY2/MS HSPAL program. Today marks the end of an era — the last 24h PharmD On-Call (PDOC) at UChicago Medicine. Featured in this pic are Dr. Allison (Thompson) Nelson, currently a Pediatric ID preceptor, but also formerly part of our inaugural residency class and the FIRST pharmacy resident to complete a PDOC shift; as well as Dr. Mabi Ahmadi, graduating PGY2 SOT resident who is completing the very last shift of this program.

With the sunsetting of this program, UChicago Medicine has been working to revamp its practice model to increase the robustness and support of our 24 hour clinical services that is not primarily reliant on pharmacy residents overnight for direct patient care activities.

Many residents over the years have stated that PDOC was one of the hardest but most valuable aspects of their residency training. We thank each and every one for the service they have given the patients at UChicago Medicine. We look forward to continue to provide excellent patient care while still supporting the highest level of learning for our residents, and we will be excited to share all the updates to our practice model in this upcoming recruitment season!
