May is Mental Health Awareness Month - a time for athletes, coaches, and communities to prioritize emotional health as part of one’s total well-being. Athletes often face immense pressure to perform, sometimes at the expense of their mental health. It's crucial to know that seeking help is a sign of strength, and not weakness. Whether you're grappling with navigating new relationships, coping in a competitive environment, or struggling with anxiety, burnout, or stress, support is available.

Getting help along the way is the smart choice!

This month, let’s break the stigma. Protect mental health within communities, athletics and professional performance.

Support can help foster:

• building confidence
• restoring motivation and joy
• establishing optimal focus
• discovering connection in relationships that will last a lifetime

Build a strong and healthy self to support all your future pursuits.

Ascend’s CEO, Jenny Conviser is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (AASP), PSYPACT Registered, and proud member of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) Mental Health Registry, working with athletes of all levels.

At Ascend, we understand that life’s challenges can feel overwhelming — but you don’t have to face stress on your own. Here are 10 clinically backed, approachable tips to help you manage stress more effectively:

🧘‍♀️ 1. Practice Deep Breathing: Just 5 minutes a day can lower cortisol levels and calm your nervous system.

🏃‍♂️ 2. Move Your Body: Exercise releases feel-good endorphins — even a short walk counts!

🛑 3. Set Healthy Boundaries: Saying "no" is a powerful act of self-care.

🌙 4. Prioritize Restful Sleep: Quality sleep is essential for managing stress — aim for 7–9 hours each night to recharge your mind and body.

🤝 5. Stay Connected: Reach out to friends or family — social support is key to resilience.

☕ 6. Be Mindful of Caffeine and Sugar: These stimulants can heighten anxiety and make stress feel more intense — try swapping in water or herbal tea when you can.

🗓️ 7. Organize Your Day: Creating simple routines and to-do lists can help clear mental clutter and make daily tasks feel more manageable.

🧠 8. Practice Mindfulness: Even 2 minutes of focused breathing or meditation can reset your mind.

💧 9. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can make you feel more tired and stressed.

📞 10. Reach Out for Support: Connecting with a professional can empower you to manage stress more effectively.

Recognizing that our value isn’t defined by body size or a number on a scale is a powerful step toward reclaiming confidence and self-worth. Who we are goes far beyond physical appearance —it’s found in our creativity, kindness, aspirations, and the way we connect with others.

Every individual deserves dignity, love, and appreciation, regardless of shape or size. We’re defined not by our appearance, but by the difference we make and the lives we inspire. Take a moment and share in the comments — what matters most to you beyond appearance?

At Ascend we work with kids and families to develop important skills that lead to healthy, meaningful connections.

We understand that the demands of family life can be complex, and we’re here to be a trusted partner in supporting your family’s well-being. Whether your child is facing unique academic pressures, balancing multiple commitments, or working through personal challenges, we’re dedicated to helping them thrive and foster healthy relationships today and in the future.

By encouraging these skills at home, you’ll empower your child to form stronger, more empathetic connections with others. Below are examples of tools we work with kids and families on.

💬 Active Listening – Encourage your child to listen carefully, maintain eye contact, and avoid interrupting others.

🤝 Respecting Differences – Teach them to respect differing opinions and agree to disagree without judgment.

💖 Choosing Kind Friends – Help your child understand the value of selecting friends who are supportive, kind, and respectful.

🔄 Adaptability in Friendships – Remind them that friendships can change over time and it’s okay if not everyone is a “best friend.”

🚪 Protecting Themselves – Teach them when it’s important to step away from relationships that are hurtful.

🌱 Being Yourself – Help your child understand the importance of having friends who allow them to be their true selves.

Call Ascend, at: (312) 283-2650 to learn more about our comprehensive care for kids of all ages, and to schedule a consultation.

It’s easy to become consumed by the pursuit of perfection, but perfection often carries a heavy weight, leading to fear, frustration, and burnout. Rather than chasing an ideal that may be unattainable or unfulfilling, direct your energy into the pursuit of excellence. The pursuit of excellence welcomes confidence, acceptance, and resilience, fostering a healthier mindset and sustainable growth.

Below is a list of brief Excellence and Perfection statements. As you read through them, consider how you can embrace the pursuit of excellence over perfection in small ways each day.
