With the rising heat this summer, St. Bernard Hospital urges our community to stay alert and take action to prevent heat-related illness. Prolonged exposure to high heat can lead to serious health risks, especially for older adults, children and those with chronic conditions.

Two key signs of heat illness to watch for:

- Dizziness or confusion
- Heavy sweating followed by cold, pale skin

If you or someone around you experiences these symptoms, move to a cool place, hydrate and seek medical attention if needed. Stay safe by wearing lightweight clothing, staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activity during peak heat hours.

We, at St. Bernard Hospital, are continuing to celebrate our “A” grade from the Leapfrog Hospital Safety ranking and want to thank our outstanding staff and leaders who made this achievement possible!

The Leapfrog Group assigns hospitals grades from A-F, based on how well patients are protected from preventable harm and are treated with the highest quality of care. Let’s celebrate this honor by continuing the hard work we did to get here, while growing every step of the way!

Respecting patients is our first step in helping patients.

Today we want to spotlight our Outpatient Services Department where, like everywhere else at St. Bernard, patients and their families are treated with respect. We would also like to give thanks to our trusted employees for making this patient testimonial possible through their kind actions and words.

This July, we want to recognize the need for hemochromatosis screening and awareness. Hemochromatosis causes the body to over absorb iron from food and consumables. Over time, this excess iron builds up in the liver, heart, pancreas, joints, skin, and endocrine glands, leading to organ damage. 💙

Many people can appear asymptomatic for years. Primary symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, skin darkening, or heart issues usually appear late. Early detection can prevent more severe health effects such as cirrhosis, diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis.
