Don’t be me… 😂
One: I didn’t price my products properly!
This one is huge because this costed me a lot of time reworking numbers and changing prices to fit a growing business. When I first started my business I really didn’t know it would grow to this extent at all (behind grateful, but true).
I cannot stress this enough! If you’re finding this wanting to start a product based business figure out COG (cost of goods). This is essential the entire cost of what it takes to make this including time, materials, any extra added items like packing paper, boxes wrapping. Coming up with a general baselines of what it costs to make your products will help you.
Once you figure that COG out you want to at MINIMUM shoot for 3-5 times the cost to make an item. This is helpful to keep in mind prior to starting or expanding and growing larger, even with it starting as a hobby :)
Two: Taking everything too seriously…
If I had a dollar for each time I didn’t post on socials, or add that workshop, or do that thing because it wasn’t “PERFECT”. On this planet I’m convinced there’s this density that we all feel at times that paralyzes us from being our authentic selves. We hold back out of fear, but honestly some of my best lessons came from things that didn’t go perfectly! There is freedom in letting things flow.
Three: Not making business friends + community!
In any space I can guarantee there is some sort of community and in this business and any business a network can help immensely. People know a lot and share freely!
In my particular space I was able to meet people first in community groups on Facebook, attended farmers markets, and it didn’t take much to find at least one person to connect to.
This one may not seem like much, but my business friends understand me when my friends and family don’t. They really understand the scarcity of time and endless sacrifices to get things done and know a lot that can save time!
Personally I don’t have a business partner, but I’ve met so many friends along the way I’ve collaborated with, hosted workshops with, and more. Some of the most helpful and kindest people in my industry were total strangers.
Hope this helps 💛
