Danish Home of Chicago

Danish Home of Chicago For over 130 years we've honored the Danish tradition of caring for our elders. We are an NFP organization. 🇩🇰🌟🫶🏡

As a CCRC, trust us with your loved one in Independent, Sheltered Care, and private pay intermediate Skilled Nursing. Nestled in a quiet Chicago neighborhood, The Danish Home, established in 1891 is a boutique continuing care retirement community that offers a secure, caring environment for its residents. At The Danish Home, we welcome applicants of any background. Yet a core of Danish-at-heart residents, staff and board members lead the community in maintaining long-running traditions and welcoming new ones brought to The Danish Home by residents of different heritages. You will enjoy lively outings, activities, and get-togethers in a close-knit setting. Comfortable rooms and suites are just steps away from tastefully decorated public spaces where you may host small private gatherings. Outside is a beautiful park-like garden, the site of many summer picnics and parties. Best of all, no matter how your circumstances might change, you can count on The Danish Home. Since our community is licensed for several levels of care, you know that once you have entered The Danish Home, you do not have to worry about the future! New residents and their families quickly get to know everyone else: residents, staff, and volunteers. At The Danish Home, there are no strangers-only friends you haven’t made yet!

Celebrated in March each year in the United States, Women’s History Month is dedicated to honoring the vital role and contributions of women in American history and society. This month, we honor the twelve women of Danish descent, who founded The Danish Home of Chicago in 1891 with charity in their hearts and a vision to assist elderly people. We also recognize our hardworking Women’s Auxiliary and our dedicated female staff, who continue to serve The Danish Home so professionally. Each day, these dynamic women help The Danish Home’s beloved residents stay active through friendships and programs while embracing social connections. The Danish Home of Chicago’s residents said “Skaal” this morning with delicious, freshly-squeezed orange juice from Florida.

The special shipment of “Golden Honeybells” is a gift from The Danish Home Foundation’s friend and donor Peter K. Nielsen of Naples. The shipment comes from Sun Harvest Citrus in Vero Beach.

The Danish Home’s residents look forward to this tasty treat each January from Florida during the cold, winter days here in Chicago. Many thanks once again to Peter Nielsen for his friendship and thoughtfulness! Skaal!

Lillejuleaften (Little Christmas Eve) is always a joyous evening for The Danish Home of Chicago’s residents, their families, and friends. December 23, 2025 was another such festive and elegant evening at The Danish Home. Deacon Carole Edwards led the Church Service at 5 p.m. followed by a delicious dinner of duck and pork roast with all the trimmings.

Guest speakers for the evening included The Danish Home’s President/CEO Scott Swanson and Danish Association Chairman Paul Pedersen. The Danish Home Foundation’s fundraising consultant and longtime friend Nike Whitcomb was the honored recipient of this year’s Essence Award. On behalf of the Women’s Auxiliary, President Karen Nylen-Swidergal presented a check to Scott Swanson to help fund the remodeling and updates to The Danish Home’s new Gathering Room restroom. The holiday evening ended with “Kransekage”, a variety of desserts and dancing around the Christmas tree. Happy New Year to everyone from The Danish Home of Chicago!
