What’s one thing many SuperAgers have in common?
They stay social — and they mean it.

Whether it’s volunteering, catching up with friends, mentoring younger generations, or joining a walking group, many of our SuperAgers say that staying connected keeps them feeling sharp and engaged.

Science backs it up: regular social activity is linked to better memory, slower cognitive decline, and even longer life. Learn more about SuperAging on our website: https://haarc.center.uchicago.edu/superaging/

Can Anyone Become a SuperAger?

While genetics play a role, lifestyle factors matter too! Social engagement, and a commitment to lifelong learning have been linked to better cognitive health and memory. But, we have a spectrum of SuperAgers that have had all kinds of life experiences and approaches to their health!

SuperAgers across North America came together this week for an energizing afternoon of connection, conversation, and community!

From coast to coast, we gathered on Zoom to share stories, spark ideas, and celebrate the power of aging well. We love staying in touch with our Superagers and look forward to seeing everyone again on Zoom this October for our next virtual connection. Since turning 102 in 2016, Edith Renfrow Smith has been a member of a select group of SuperAgers — older adults whose memory abilities match those of people decades younger.

She reminds people that she only stopped driving at age 103, and that was because of arm strength, not memory. She still cooks, participates in her church, and enjoys an active social life — a reflection of how staying mentally, physically, and socially engaged supports healthy aging.

At 111, Edith continues to show us what’s possible through resilience, curiosity, and a deep connection to community. We’re honored to celebrate her as part of the HAARC community.

At UChicago, we’re proud to champion age-friendly healthcare that values the voices, experiences, and brilliance of older adults.

A few weeks ago at the SHARE Network Healthy Aging Symposium, our SuperAgers shared why age-friendly care matters—and how it supports their exceptional aging journeys.

Together, we’re advancing a future where older adults are not only included but celebrated. Learn more about SuperAgers and what we’re learning from them here: https://haarc.center.uchicago.edu/superaging/

Dr. Emily Rogalski’s research shows that SuperAgers — people over 80 with exceptional memory — have rare brain cells that may help protect their thinking skills.

These cells, called von Economo neurons, are found in a part of the brain that helps with attention and social connection.

Most people lose brain volume as they age. SuperAgers don’t follow that pattern — and learning why could help us all age more successfully. You can read more about SuperAging Research here: https://haarc.center.uchicago.edu/superaging-scientific-advancements/

Did you know the SuperAging Study enrolls participants from across North America?

While HAARC leads recruitment in the Chicago area, we’re also part of a larger research team with sites at:
- University of Wisconsin-Madison
- University of Michigan
- Western University (Canada)
- Emory University

If you're 80+ with exceptional memory — or know someone who is — you may qualify.
