At University of Wisconsin-Madison, our SuperAging Research Initiative team—led by Dr. Ozioma Okonkwo—is proud to collaborate with partner sites across North America to advance understanding of exceptional memory performance in adults 80 and older.

Beyond the lab, our Wisconsin team is actively out in the community—connecting with older adults, sharing research findings, and celebrating the remarkable SuperAgers who inspire this work every day.

What makes a SuperAger super? It’s not just memory—it’s emotional wellbeing too.

New research led by Dr. Claire Alexander University of Michigan with the SuperAging Research Initiative finds that adults 80+ with exceptional memory also report higher life satisfaction and lower stress, sadness, and anger than the general population. This may mean emotional health plays a key role in how we age—and stay sharp.

What’s one thing many SuperAgers have in common?
They stay social — and they mean it.

Whether it’s volunteering, catching up with friends, mentoring younger generations, or joining a walking group, many of our SuperAgers say that staying connected keeps them feeling sharp and engaged.

Science backs it up: regular social activity is linked to better memory, slower cognitive decline, and even longer life. Learn more about SuperAging on our website: https://haarc.center.uchicago.edu/superaging/
