During Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, it’s important to focus on protecting young eyes.
Regular eye exams, appropriate protective eyewear during sports and activities, and awareness of potential hazards at home and outdoors all play a key role in keeping children’s eyes safe.
Early detection of vision problems is vital for a child’s development and success in school. Make sure children wear shatterproof goggles or glasses for sports like baseball and basketball, and during activities like woodworking or yard work. Sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays are essential when outdoors.
Teach children to avoid looking directly at the sun or bright lights, wear sunglasses and brimmed hats outside, and be cautious of sharp objects, chemicals, and small toy parts.
Other tips to protect their eye health include washing hands frequently to prevent infections, limiting screen time to reduce eye strain, and educating children about eye safety — like not rubbing their eyes with dirty hands and reporting injuries immediately. Always choose age-appropriate toys and supervise play to avoid eye injuries.
