Spring running is back. So are the injuries that come with it.

Runner’s knee. Shin splints. Achilles tightness that shows up on your first steps out of bed. These don’t come out of nowhere — they come from the body compensating for something upstream. Tight hips overloading the knee. A weak soleus pushing stress into the shin. A hip mobility deficit that’s been quietly building all winter.

Most clinics treat where it hurts. We treat why it happened.

With the Goose Island 5K Fun Run coming up June 3 (and us right there with you as a proud sponsor), we put together a breakdown of the 6 most common spring running injuries, and what’s actually going on when they show up.

Meet Annalesa Maggio — the newest addition to the Free Body team. 🖤

Annalesa came up through Northwestern’s DPT program, then went straight into a residency at Midwest Orthopedics at Rush — spending her first year out of school working alongside orthopedic surgeons, physiatrists, and physical therapists on some of the most complex cases in the city. She’s currently working toward her Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) certification, a credential held by fewer than 10% of practicing PTs.

Her clinical passion? Helping people understand how their body actually moves — not just fixing what’s hurting, but building the kind of strength and body awareness that keeps you out of trouble long term.

Outside the clinic, she’s logging miles in the pool, under a barbell, or on a pilates reformer. Summer weekends? You’ll find her on the 606 or biking the lakefront. Born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, she knows this city, loves this city, and is genuinely thrilled to be treating patients here.

She’s also, reportedly, on a very serious mission to find the best coffee shop in Chicagoland. Recommendations welcome.

Welcome to Free Body, Annalesa. We’re glad you’re here.

Wheelchair to deadlifts. Four months to full mobility.

Joaquin came to Free Body after a motorcycle accident left him with screws and plates in his shoulder, collarbone, and ankle — unable to walk, unable to lift his arm, wondering if this was just his life now.

It wasn’t.

Working one-on-one with Marc, no aides, no shared sessions, no generic protocol — just 45 minutes of undivided attention every visit — Joaquin got his life back. Hardware and all.

If you’ve been through PT before and left with more questions than progress, Joaquin’s story is worth watching to the end.

Three angles. One session.

Floor-based work to find what the hip and shoulder are quietly not doing. Hands-on manual work where the tissue’s been guarding too long. Standing resistance work to retrain the pattern under load.

Most clinics treat the spot that hurts. At Free Body, we treat the system that’s been compensating around it — because pain is usually the last symptom to show up, and the first one we’re tempted to chase.

45 minutes. One patient. One clinician. No aides. That’s the only way a session like this is possible.

Carlos with a returning patient this week. New chapter, same standard.

Here’s what we didn’t tell you about Monday’s post.

When a future physical therapist stood at our table last week and said “how do I not know about this?” — she wasn’t just talking about a career option.

She was telling on her own industry.

Think about what that actually means. The people training to treat you can’t find real one-on-one PT. The clinicians graduating next month don’t know clinics like ours exist.

They’ve spent their entire education inside a system where 20-minute sessions and shared attention have become the default.

So if the profession’s own graduates can’t find it — what chance did you have?

This is why you tried PT and it didn’t work.

This is why you gave up after six visits that felt like you were being processed.

This is why you’ve been sleeping on the wrong side for two years because it hurts less.

This is why picking up your kid makes you brace every single time.

This is why you stopped walking the dog the long way around the block.

It wasn’t that your body couldn’t heal. It’s that nobody had the time to figure out why it wasn’t.

At Free Body, every session is 45 minutes. One provider. No aides. No techs splitting your attention. Your PT’s only job during your appointment is you. We don’t chase your symptoms — we find what’s driving them. Most patients finish in fewer total visits than a standard clinic recommends. Many avoid surgery altogether.

That’s not a marketing claim. That’s what happens when someone finally has the time to listen to your body.

You’re not broken. You’ve just never had PT that was actually PT.

This week,we took the team to see the new space.

There’s nothing in it yet. Bare walls, empty rooms, a lot of potential and not much else.

But everyone walked through it together — where the treatment rooms will be, where patients will come in, where the one-on-one sessions will happen. The same model we’ve built in Humboldt Park, on the northwest side.

We also brought some tacos and a piñata. The celebration was always part of the plan. See it before it’s ready. Let the team stand in it before the equipment shows up. Mark the moment before the work gets heavy.

Belmont Cragin is coming. If you’re a patient who’s been waiting for us to be closer to you — it won’t be long.

And if you’re an experienced PT — ideally bilingual — who wants to be part of what we’re building here: careers link in bio, or DM us directly.

A PT about to graduate with her doctorate stopped at our table at the Rosalind Franklin career fair. She read our model and said:

“This is what I’ve been looking for. How do I not know about this?”

She wasn’t alone. We were the only independent clinic there.
And her question stuck with us — because it’s not just about new grads. What about the PTs already out there? Five, ten, fifteen years into a system that kept getting faster, more crowded, more administrative. Who remember why they got into this and can feel how far the work has drifted.

You’re not imagining it.

At Free Body, we built something different. Fellowship-trained leadership. Fellowship sponsorship offered to every clinician we hire. And every PT — regardless of experience — completes our six-month one-on-one mentorship program.
45-minute sessions. One patient at a time. No techs. No shortcuts.

If you’ve been inside the system long enough to miss what you used to love about this work — we’re hiring.

New grads welcome. Experienced PTs encouraged. Bilingual candidates especially needed.

Humboldt Park. Second location opening in Belmont Cragin.
