Instructor Spotlight
Lauren Jones: Movement Collective Pilates, Australia

Meet Lauren Jones, a pilates professional since 2005 & principal instructor at Movement Collective Pilates in Australia. In 2019, Lauren completed her Pre/Postnatal Health & Exercise Specialist Certification, including Exercise Through Menopause™, The Center Method for Diastasis Recti Recovery™, Support Your Floor™, and Rocking & Rolling to Release™.

Lauren’s own postpartum journey led her to The Center for Women’s Fitness, where she was blown away by the effectiveness of Carolyne Anthony’s programs. She notes that the emphasis on the nervous & fascial systems were far ahead of current trends, helping her understand the differences between working with women and men.

Since completing her certification with The Center for Women’s Fitness, Lauren observes that she can more effectively cater to her clients’ needs. “It gave me so many tools to develop my [foundational] knowledge and explore new ways to move our clients through an exercise class,” she says. “Sometimes we need a calming session, other times we need a [more] physically challenging workout.”

Her clients have noticed a difference, too. “Many recognize the difference between a teacher who can find connections to breath and mindfulness [during an] exercise program, and a teacher who moves you through [a program] and counts reps,” Lauren explains. “Sometimes they want the latter, but they keep coming back for the magic green balls and those unwinding moments that Carolyne’s method provides.”

Lauren has also found that The Center’s courses helped grow her business. She shared that having a postpartum recovery program is a very popular way to draw women back to exercise in a safe, comfortable environment. The menopause programs have also fitted easily into her clients’ routines—they recognize they are performing a similar movement, but executing it more efficiently, with less strain and more success.

In addition to her studies with The Center, Lauren is working towards certifying with Body Organics Education with Carla Mullins. She assists with Carla’s teacher training program in Sydney, serving as a mentor and host studio to students.

Looking forward to 2023 and getting back into presenting live workshops again!
What better place to start than New York City?
I will be offering my myofascial release course on Saturday January 14 and the pelvic floor health course on Sunday January 15 2023.
The Rocking and Rolling to Release course is based on the work of John F Barnes and includes the use of balls for gentle pressure, rocking movements for release and breathwork throughout for the ultimate experience in self massage.
These techniques are then applied in the pelvic floor course coupled with functional movement to provide the teacher with the tools for creating healthy pelvic floor programs for their clients.
Join us- it will be informative and fun.

How does The Center’s Pre and Post-natal Pilates Specialist Program work?

In order to make life simple for your prenatal and postpartum client, we have designed the program to be one continuous program from the first trimester through the early postpartum period.

1st Trimester-We set the ground work for the program in the first trimester, teaching the client the importance of a functional pelvic floor and supple connection through the abdominal muscles.

2nd trimester-the exercises will stay the same, but the body will begin to rapidly change. Your client need not learn a new set of exercises for the second trimester but learn to adapt the same exercise to her new body.

3rd trimester- once again the exercises will stay the same, but the body will change. Towards the end of the third trimester, we have included more stretching and releasing exercises in time for the birth.

4th trimester-the exercises included throughout pregnancy are also designed to become the early postpartum rehabilitation program and will be inclusive of conditions such as Diastasis Recti, C section and p***c bone separation.

This program design should eliminate the need for specific “trimester” exercises, allowing the client to become familiar with the exercise and her body’s response and to be able to choose the ones she is comfortable with at any time.

This week I’ll head over to the Pilates Method Alliance Conference in Las Vegas where I’ll present my research on Diastasis Recti. I have been working with this condition for over 25 years and now with the advancement in fascial research, I am able to offer the scientific evidence behind the method I have developed.

While teaching women from a physical standpoint is important, we have to include teaching women with vocabulary that empowers, listens and educates. This will entail looking at shameful, judgmental, biased vocabulary and replacing it with more empowering, positive and supportive vocabulary.

We must acknowledge the unique role of the female hormones in the emotional and mental bodies and learn a more holistic approach to working with the physical body.

We need to integrate the hormonal, musculoskeletal and fascial systems with the mind for a whole body solution that sees them through every stage of life.

Our Book Description

Pelvic Floor dysfunction & Diastasis Recti Recovery programs have gained the much-needed importance and attention in the last decade. There have been many research articles and books written with respect to a variety of treatment modalities that include manual & movement protocols for the same. But, despite the advancement in our knowledge of the complex architecture of the abdominal wall, its myofascial connections and newer therapeutic techniques, most of the protocols are usually a hit/miss, because of a lack of proper pedagogy and more importantly its practical application being taught to movement teachers/ fitness trainers.

We aim to bridge that gap and fill the void with this book. Not only will it help practitioners acquire a strong theoretical base, but it will give them simple yet effective practice protocols that they can use as a primer irrespective of the type of movement they teach (Yoga/ Pilates/ Zumba/ personal training/ sport specific athletic conditioning etc.) It intends to be a great resource that translates the latest research in the fields of fascia and discoveries in human anatomy to movement protocols for supporting pelvic floor health, optimising breath & abdominal muscle function.

The primary audience of the book will be movement teachers, but it will also work as a great supplemental tool for doctors & physical therapists, so that they can guide their patients towards a sustainable practice.

Clients with the issues outlined in this book often have a very negative body image and this forces them to set an unrealistic outcome-based goal and removes the focus from behavioural based goals that will truly influence their recovery. When they choose to add the simple techniques in the book, it will help them be more in tune with themselves and deeply engage in their process of recovery.

The techniques in this book aren’t restricted to just postnatal women & this knowledge will allow practitioners to greatly impact the quality of lives of their clients/ patients.

A diastasis recti is a disconnection through your midline - which runs from your ribcage to your p***c bone. This will leave you unsupported through your "core" which comprises mainly of your respiratory diaphragm, your pelvic floor and your abdominal muscles, just to name a few! However, a DR is a whole body issue and to compensate for this lack of support, you may find yourself holding your breath (your diaphragm), tucking your pelvis under and gripping your butt (your pelvic floor and abdominals), Clenching your teeth and jaw and tensing your shoulders (nothing working through your core).

One of the techniques we begin with in our program is relaxation. We take you step by step through a guided relaxation that encourages you to become more aware of your "holding" patterns. Once we get you out of your "flight or fight" mode, you are ready for the next step towards recovery of your DR.

Fascial Release is the first step in our successful diastasis recti recovery program.

Releasing the possible fascial restrictions pulling your abdominal muscles apart will be optimal in being able to realign and then strengthen them. This is especially important for those who have had surgery in the abdominal or back area.

Sale Time!

This course will lay the foundation for all the other courses in our program. We will look at the female pelvic floor from a functional and healthy standpoint and use this as a reference point for any dysfunction that may occur throughout your client’s life. We aim to demystify the application of the function of the pelvic floor muscles to movement and show you how the pelvic floor functions normally and naturally with your breath and everyday activities.

You will gain a deeper understanding of

The anatomy of the pelvic diaphragm and urogenital triangle.
The changes the pelvic floor adapts to in all stages of a woman’s life.
The fascial connections through the pelvic floor.
How the female hormones have an impact on the fascial, bony and muscular systems.
How the fluctuations of these hormones affect movement.
How all movement is generated from the pelvis and pelvic floor.
Why dysfunction happens.
Keeping the pelvic floor healthy through release, breath and movement.
