Just as we shared back 2017, once again today we will experience an extraordinary solar eclipse, and the advice and precautions remain the same as we shared back then.
Here in Chicago, the eclipse is only partial so there is absolutely NO safe time to look or stare directly at the sun without any proper protection even at its peak at ~2:07pm, there is only ~94% coverage.
Please make sure your solar eclipse glasses have the ISO 12312-2 certification and please test them out before using them today. You should not be able to see anything through these glasses besides the sun; there are many fake glasses being sold everywhere, even on Amazon! Also make sure the solar eclipse glasses fit properly and are covering your eyes the entire time that you are viewing the eclipse in Chicago today. These solar eclipse glasses are usually made for adults so please make sure they fit your child’s face properly and are in place the entire time if they are also viewing the solar eclipse.
Remember irreversible damage to your eyes can occur in 30 seconds or less. If you have any signs of solar retinopathy after viewing today’s eclipse such as the following:
-blurry vision
-headache
-a blind spot in your central vision in one or both eyes
-increased sensitivity to light
-distorted vision, in which a straight line looks bent
-changes in the way you see color, known as "dyschromatopsia"

Be safe everyone!
