Election Night Vigil
I'm considering hosting an online vigil the evening of the election. Many of you will remember one I hosted in 2020. Would you be interested in attending?
Here's how i described the vigil I offered in 2020:

An Election Evening Vigil
Finding Peace, Praying for Peace and Justice
Tuesday, November 5th | 7:30-9:00pm CT

Gather in community on election night to pray for peace and justice in the elections. There will be time for silent prayer and community prayer as we prepare to enter the process of learning the results of the election. The program includes a guided meditation designed to relax body and mind. Please bring a candle and invite your friends to this online event. Registration is required but there is no fee for this program. Details to follow.

This is an interview I did for MysticMag, a site that promotes psychic readings. I'm not so much into that, but I thought the interview might motivate me to think about who I am and what I'm offering. If you read it, I'd love to hear what you think of it!

Who is Bill Epperly? What can you tell me about yourself and your professional journey?

I sometimes think of myself as a pragmatic mystic. I have been walking the spiritual path most of my life through all kinds of states, from dark nights to great illuminations. By grace, I have experienced a stable spiritual awakening. I have always enjoyed sharing what I have found with others, and over the years that has led me to offer spiritual coaching, energy healing, and training in mindfulness meditation.

In my teens, I identified as an agnostic (Christian) with a deep fascination with the big questions of life. This curiosity led me to pursue a PhD in biochemistry, through which I hoped I might understand the nature of life at the deepest level. Instead of finding the answers I was seeking through science, life suddenly opened up another path for me. One day, totally unexpectedly, I had a spontaneous awakening while attending a lecture by the Benedictine monk David Steindl-Rast, OSB. That experience shifted my focus from science to spirituality. Over the past 40 years since my initial awakening, I have studied many spiritual practices. I have done my best to integrate them into a multifaceted approach that includes Buddhist, Christian contemplative, and Kashmir Shaivism teachings.

What are the main ways you work with people through spiritual coaching?

My coaching work with individuals focuses on healing, mindful self-awareness, and spiritual awakening—three aspects of spiritual life that are deeply interconnected. We discuss the challenges they’re experiencing in their spiritual life as well as their goals. Sometimes, having a coach to discuss what’s happening in your spiritual life is a huge help. During spiritual coaching sessions, I may introduce VortexHealing to clear difficult issues. In other cases, I will incorporate practices from the mindfulness meditation tradition into the session. It all depends on what feels right for the person in that moment. I intuitively blend VortexHealing, mindfulness, and spiritual coaching to work with each person’s unique situation. This flexible approach helps people deepen spiritually and learn to trust their inner wisdom. It helps them cultivate present-moment awareness so they can really be here/now in their lives. Ultimately, my goal is to help people find freedom from the issues that limit them, so they can live rich, rewarding lives.

How do you use mindfulness meditation to help people deal with stress, anxiety, and everyday life?

Mindfulness meditation is a body of powerful practices from the Buddhist tradition. Mindfulness meditation can help us to realize just how fragmented our attention is. It reveals how often we are lost in worry or daydreams. As we realize how “all over the place” we are, we develop an interest in doing something about it. Through mindfulness practices, people can learn how to bring their attention back to the present moment.

Mindfulness meditation can be taken up as a spiritual practice leading to awakening or as part of a wellness program designed to improve physical, emotional and mental health. Some people are interested in both paths. I work with all types of people!

For those who practice mindfulness as a spiritual path leading to awakening, I offer a combination of spiritual coaching and mindfulness meditation training. I show them how to get started with their practice: proper posture, a beginning meditation practice, and the guidelines they need to feel confident that they are practicing correctly. Once they’ve started, I guide them as needed to stay on track. As their mindfulness deepens, they learn to integrate their new-found mindful awareness into every aspect of life— including work life, personal relationships, and the many simple moments of the day. One of the great fruits of mindfulness meditation is the ability to really enjoy the ordinary moments of the day, like a cup of coffee or a hug from a friend. Over time, this mindful presence can lead to a profound awakening to one’s interconnectedness with all life, deepening their overall sense of well-being and spiritual awareness.

Can you explain how VortexHealing works and how you incorporate it into your practice?

I have been interested in energy healing for decades, and have completed several workshops, but it wasn’t until I discovered VortexHealing that I felt that I’d found my path (vortexhealing.org). One of the things I love about it is how it integrates so well with my understanding of the body from my scientific training. It embraces my science-based understanding of health, even as it also transcends it and takes it way beyond the health of the physical body.

VortexHealing is a form of Divine Energy healing in which the healer channels directly from the Divine source of all life. VortexHealing is very powerful. A short list of issues where it can be useful include:

Healing emotional issues like anxiety, depression, grief, and trust;
Clearing bacterial and viral infections;
Making genetic modifications to enhance well being;
Healing on all levels – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual;
Catalyzing one’s spiritual growth and development – including awakening.

Sessions can be online or in person. A typical session will begin with a discussion of the client’s life situation. During this discussion, we will decide on a focus for the day’s healing. This is followed by the actual energy healing, which may last 45-60 minutes. During the healing, the client may sit comfortably or recline. There isn’t much for the client to do except relax and receive the healing. While they are resting, I channel Divine energy while holding the intention to heal the issue we have identified. After the healing, we have a brief discussion of anything that has come up during the session. Sometimes there are next steps to follow that will help deepen the healing as it continues to unfold in the days after the session. VortexHealing is a pretty incredible healing tool. There are many levels of healing that may be addressed over time. For those who really go deep, it can even become a path to spiritual awakening.

If you are looking to deepen your experience of the Divine in daily life, I invite you to contact me for a consultation to explore how I can support your spiritual journey.

This is a zoom selfie from the final day of a VortexHealing course I took last week. It was amazing. Courses are split into two tracks: ones in which you pick up new healing tools and courses focused on awakening. This was an awakening class. The third I've taken in the last calendar year. I went into it wondering if it would be worthwhile - it was all day every day for 6 days. Well, it was so deep, so transformative. I am struggling to find words to describe the experience and the ways in which it changed me. I came out of it more excited about this adventure and re-inspired to dive back into my own path of self-healing. Of course, I am also offering healings to others. If you're interested in learning more about VortexHealing, please send me a dm. I am considering scheduling a brief zoom meeting to share more about this amazing work.

Start up mode vs. bureaucrat mode - this puts words to and fleshes out something I've seen over and over again.
Bureaucrat mode is what happens when companies get big, scaled, and successful. People purposely implement best practices with good intentions, but these processes can make it hard to get anything done. Startups have a huge advantage over large companies in that they can move incredibly fast and just focus on output. As startups start to gain success and get bigger, they start to get bogged down with bureaucracy. This allows for newer, more nimble startups to emerge - then the cycle continues.

I expect that this program by Andrew Holecek at Heartwood Center for Body Mind Spirit will be really good! Andrew is bringing in new ways of meditating, including what he calls Reverse Meditation (he's written a book on it), which are really powerful. If you're gotten stuck in a place of meditative quiet and peace but sense that there are still issues under the surface (there are, there always are), then reverse meditation can help you release them as you deepen your realization.

What a super-interesting article on the neuropsychology of being a manager!

"Completing tasks and reaching goals feels good and makes you feel competent. Most people don't get this feeling from managing people. Management can be demoralizing due to the lack of measurable progress. Contributions are often several levels, and often weeks/months, removed from success events. This is the nature of management work." - summary of article from TLDR

My new substack is out. This week's post starts with a glorious fantasy about easy enlightenment and goes on to explore some of my early days at the Zen Buddhist Temple of Ann Arbor (1989-1992). I had a lot of fun remembering those "good 'ole days" and hope you will enjoy reading it!

I recently sat down with my friend Clint Sabom to discuss my experience with VortexHealing. Clint and I met years ago when he interviewed me for his podcast, . Nowadays, he's into hermeticism and a co-founder of Contemplative Light. In other words, he's an interesting guy! In this far-ranging conversation, he interviewed me as someone who'd never heard of Vortex Healing before. I think you will find it interesting!

I love this!
"Find something you enjoy doing and just do it because you enjoy it. If you have to, make some goals for yourself, but never for your “audience”.

Stop Acting Like You're Famous
Advice for myself around leisure activities.

You aren’t famous. Anything you do or create will probably receive little to no attention, so stop optimizing for a non-existent audience and instead focus on what makes you enjoy the activity.

Want to try a craft or artistic hobby? Focus on mastering the skill and enjoy the variety it can provide. You don’t need to build a personal style. No one will care. Want to do photography and think black and white photos are cool? Great! You don’t need to create an Instagram branded all around your moody black and white photos. Most likely you’ll get bored of it and want to try a different type of photography, and that’s great. You aren’t Ansel Adams, no one will care if your “style” is all over the place.

Do you want to build an app or website but don’t enjoy the process of designing? Then make it ugly. Who cares! Design is for an audience and you don’t have one. Functionality is more important right now. Maybe a designer will notice and want to improve it for you, but until then take pride in your crappy UI.

Blogging is fun and therapeutic. Grammar and editing aren’t. As long as your thoughts are coherent, don’t worry too much about writing mistakes or filtering yourself. Just use Grammarly to fix elementary-level errors and move on. It’s more about the writing process than the final product.

The most egregious thing you can do with any activity is daydream about how you can make money off of it. That’s the quickest way to optimize for the wrong things and suck the fun right out of it. Most likely you will stop doing the activity almost immediately, so save the money-making schemes for work.

In the end, find something you enjoy doing and just do it because you enjoy it. If you have to, make some goals for yourself, but never for your “audience”.
