A Map of My Want follows a nonbinary femme on their long walk home from a rural county jail as they contemplate how threesomes, quantum mechanics, beaches and nature hikes led them to an epic journey of sexual liberation.

went to work during the Right of Return Retreat in New York last month! Thanks to for bringing such a talented photographer out for portraits. I love these!

I’ve been in the liminal space lately, trying to quiet my mind so I can determine what steps to take next. I’ve done a lot these last few years—and there’s still more to come. But in this moment, I am accepting that I cannot control how others see or read me. I cannot control where my work goes. I can only hope that it helps someone feel seen. I can hope it convinces someone to do or be better. I can hope. I am remembering that it takes courage to do the impossible, to thrive despite…

I’m preparing my mind, body, and spirit for what is to come. And I’m celebrating that I’ve at least made it this far.

*Link In The Bio*

Trying to find your way back to the page? Have a poem draft you’d like a new set of eyes on, whether it’s a few years old or you wrote it on yesterday’s commute? Want to meet other poets eager to learn and build community? Have a hankering for a pastry? Then Pie & Poetry is the class for you!

Pie & Poetry is one part generative, one part workshop. In the first hour, our instructor will lead the class in a craft talk, a close reading of a poem, and a generative prompt or two. In the second hour, students that have a draft they’d like to workshop with the class can do so on a first-come, first-serve basis. This draft can be from the generative portion of class, or written beforehand. Even if a student doesn’t bring a poem to be workshopped, they may participate in the conversation as much or as little as they wish, as the process is a learning experience for all involved. As for our in-class treat, we’ll be providing pie from First Slice for folks to eat.

This space’s goal is to foster community amongst poets, and to encourage our development as poets of all experience levels.

The seeds of my new endeavor, a work-in-progress using found objects & poetic interventions. Been wanting to get into visual art for a minute but didn’t know how I could scale some of my bigger ideas. Finally got some clarity from the aché & I’m in it now.

Two poems from A Map of My Want about the fires in California. The first one was my climate change/ B**M poem about the planet’s relationship with humanity. The second poem is abt people who migrate because of climate change, only to end up detained or killed in our immigration system. The last portion of the poem features incarcerated people who were forced to fight the fires but weren’t compensated or freed for the service at the Paradise Camp Fire. I don’t want to imagine what this fire will do to Los Angeles—the county I was born in.

The theme for my 3rd Christmas in Chicago was GRATITUDE. I was excited this whole season, like some weight that I’d gotten used to was suddenly lifted off my chest these last few months. I get to be excited and be present and appreciate every radical moment I live through. Thank you to the Tuggles for letting me be present to witness such beautiful moments! Shoutout to Carz for being awesome. I don’t know what to expect in 2025–but I’m so ready.

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE:

The .literary.complex Announces As New Board Chair

Chicago, IL, December 10, 2024: The Guild Literary Complex announced Tuesday that critically-acclaimed author and Art for Justice Grantee Faylita Hicks has been elected Chair of the Guild Literary Complex’s Board of Directors for a three-year term, effective September 18, 2024. A recent transplant to Chicago (2022), Hicks comes to the Guild from Central Texas with over 20 years of experience as an advocate supporting national arts organizations and justice-focused nonprofits through capacity building and direct engagement.

“Serving an organization with such a rich history is truly an honor and privilege. In this role, I plan to uplift the mission of our founding members and empower the Guild Literary Complex to thrive for another 35 years by focusing on what makes this organization so unique: its support of marginalized writers in the Midwest.

During my term, the Guild Literary Complex will deepen our relationships with our organizational partners and collaborators, emphasize our commitment to providing meaningful opportunities to writers from underrepresented communities, establish new monthly programs and offerings, grow our board of directors and staff, and expand our platform to embrace the inclusion of people at every stage of their careers writing in journalism, music, and film.” - Faylita Hicks

As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting Chicago’s literary arts community, the organization will take a strategic planning pause in the first half of 2025 to review and align its organizational goals, expand its offerings, and develop an equitable 3-year member-driven development plan. The Guild will have limited programming during this time but will return with a “35 Years Celebration” and season launch in the summer of 2025.
