Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is emerging as a leading somatic therapy for resolving the symptoms of trauma and chronic pain. BCST is a profound modality that uses light contact-touch to orient to the deeper forces within our human system. It supports the regulation of the nervous system through the release of tension and the underlying imprint of trauma that is a primary cause of stress and chronic pain in the body. BCST is particularly helpful to ease and resolve the imprint of shock and bring forth our innate resilience to daily stress. It helps restore physical health, mental clarity and emotional wellbeing.

Alzheimer’s and Craniosacral Therapy (CST)

Craniosacral therapy is significant in helping turn back the causes of Alzheimer’s disease, and the Dementia that occurs later in its progression. Essentially, the Amyloid β plaque that accumulates as the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s occurs because of inadequate flushing of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) through the tissues of the brain. In fact Amyloid β plaque accumulates in the brain well before symptoms of Alzheimer’s begin and is a key driver of Alzheimer’s disease pathology.

Barring other pathological causes, compression forces in the cranium and restriction in the neck and chest are almost always the root cause because, individually or combined, they restrict flow of CSF flushing through the brain that allows Amyloid β plaque to accumulate. Cranial Sacral Therapy restores the flow of CSF by releasing the tension and inertia that are the underlying cause of its restriction.

Relational Harmonics: Changes in Long-Tide Cycle Duration and Phase

For several years, I've been pursuing an understanding of the perceptual changes in Long-Tide I have experienced ongoingly in both my own body as well as in the relational field in session with clients.

Toward the end of my foundational training with Franklyn Sills in 2016, I had begun to experience the fluctuation of fluid-tide perception in my own body field. By the time our class graduated, it completely disappeared or rather had become subsumed into an inhalation/exhalation at the long-tide cycle of 50sec./50sec. I became used to tuning in and feeling the slow 50sec./50sec. flexion/extension through my body, most noticeably at the wrists and hands.

Several months ago I woke up early in the morning sometime between 2-3 am and, lying there, I tuned in to find the cycle. I could not find any movement at all, only complete stillness. Not too long after this an inhalation began and continued for several minutes. My phone on the bedside table had a clock app. with a sweep hand on it, so I opened it and began tracking this cycle. At first it was 7 min 5 sec. inhalation / 7 min 5 sec. exhalation. I don't know how long this continued but at some point the cycle switched to 4 min. 5 sec. at inhalation, followed by a 4 min. 5 sec. exhalation. Sometime during twilight before dawn it returned to a 50sec./50sec. cycle. I have not tracked this yet but my hunch is that Long-Tide cycle duration changes may occur in conjunction with organ circadian and metabolic phase change that occur at different stages of the night.

I recently attended a post-grad training with an elder teacher of BCST and asked her about this. Without hesitation she mentioned harmonics and suggested I track the changes in the cycle times. In an earlier conversation with another BCST teacher about Long-Tide, they spoke of harmonics of many tides. Many of us know of Scott Zamurut's experience of a 20 min. tide he's called the Embodiment Tide.

More recently I have begun perceiving Long-Tide inhalation and exhalation occurring simultaneously on opposite sides of my body, one side in inhalation (flexion) and the other in exhalation (extension) at the same time. Many of us have been taught that long-tide is a fixed rate cycle with two phases (inhalation/exhalation) that follow each other linearly.

Then, doing some research for this post, I came across an article written by Michael Shea in 2017 entitled, The Three Categories of Experiencing Primary Respiration. In it he speaks about all of this and much more.

Biodynamics, the Subtle Body and Shifts in Health and Perception

Trauma held in the body/mind field creates a regioning that has two possible potentia. The first is density and inertia held in the body, enfolding the remnants of trauma in the physical tissue and non-physical fields until it can be resolved; the second is the way in which the trauma and the subtlety of its resultant, subconscious habit-field –our thoughts/concepts, projections and accompanying actions– direct its affects in and as our experience of perceptivity and perceiving.

In the tradition of inner yoga teachings on the subtle body, the rising of thoughts, concepts and projections that are grasped at as real Are the movement of winds through the subtle channels, the habit-field of the subtle body/mind.

We know that the practice of Craniosacral Biodynamics has the capacity to engage these habit-fields in much if not the same way that inner yoga practices do. In the depths of the holistic (or parasympathetic) shift during a session, the winds that are our ordinary, sometimes chaotic, mind of grasping at perception become temporarily subsumed into the quantum midline, the central channel. Here, what can be resolved during the course of a session has been described in Franklyn Sills' Seven Depths of Stillness, from volume one of his Foundations in Craniosacral Biodynamics. This is the domain of trauma resolution and, more importantly, it is the domain of transformation.

This Mystery is the most profound and beautiful secret hidden within our work.

How this occurs is difficult to know. But we do know from sharing with our clients and observing them over time that many things begin to change in their perceptual engagement with the world. They begin to become spontaneously happy, more freely enjoying life outside of conditions and circumstances. Fears and other strong emotional habits drop away. One example of this is an African American client of mine who told me she always made sure to dress up a bit before going to her bank to talk to an associate about her business account. One day, she realized that without a thought, she had gone in her bib overalls, sneakers and dreadlocks to do business, all without a care. She realized the social fear that had narrowed and entrained her behavior simply dropped away within the emergence of the simple enjoyment of life. In other examples, clients begin to discover an ease and the 'space' in which they can observe and make choices about what to say or do in a particular situation, actualizing an innate richness, trust and simplicity in their lives.

Our training and ongoing practice of Biodynamics opens something within us, it brings 'organs of perception' online that were previously latent. We are able to perceive fluid and tidal movements not only in and around our clients, but as the appearing of the entire non-physical world, unveiled through the endeavor of our training and practice. Some discover the meaning in the movements of color and light, others through the felt-perception of spatial movement. Still others intuit and know where to begin and follow a session through with their client.

If there is such thing as a quantitative measure of 'healing', it will be found in the qualitative way in which perception and awareness change and unfold -and as a result, we will discover we are not who we think we are.
